La giovane Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) sta sopravvivendo ad un cancro alla tiroide al quarto stadio (con colonia satellite nei polmoni) grazie all'assunzione di un farmaco sperimentale. La madre, credendola affetta da depressione la obbliga a frequentare un gruppo di supporto per sopravvissuti al cancro. Grazie ad un altro membro del gruppo, Isaac (Nat Wolff) incontra Augustus "Gus" Waters (Ansel Elgort) , un ex giocatore di basket a cui è stata amputata una gamba........
Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg.......
