film d’animazione Disney del 1963, narra le vicende dell’adolescenza di Re Artù. Il personaggio storico che nella pellicola è un esile ragazzino di 12 anni, soprannominato Semola, fa lo sguattero e sogna di diventare lo scudiero del fratellastro Caio. Ma il destino opera in modo decisamente bizzarro. E così sulla strada di Semola approda Mago Merlino, vecchio attempato dalla lunga barba bianca, che odia i secoli bui del Medioevo, perché privi delle comodità dell’era moderna, e che cercherà con un particolare percorso di trasformare il ragazzo in un perfetto Re d’Inghilterra. La sceneggiatura s’ispira al romanzo di T.H. White, discostandosene solamente nelle sequenze più divertenti del film, in cui Mago Merlino e il suo gufo parlante Anacleto litigano sul livello di istruzione da dare a Semola. La pellicola ha una struttura prettamente didattica e la morale si riassume facilmente nel detto: “Fai la cosa giusta!”, anche se sei un pesce o uno scoiattolo. Non mancano certamente i cattivi in questa storia soprattutto la “magnifica, splendida Maga Magò”, trasposizione comica della Fata Morgana, che sfiderà Merlino in un duello all’ultimo sangue e con finale a sorpresa.
