Un film che ha fatto storia, ha segnato un’epoca e continua ad oggi ad essere tra i film più visti nel mondo. L’accavallamento di gambe della sensualissima Sharon Stone è rimasto inamovibile dall’immaginario erotico maschile, nonostante le mode in ambito sessuale si siano molto evolute da allora. Ma il mistero, che eccita l’immaginazione, nasce proprio dal gioco velamento/disvelamento, che nel film tocca vertici esasperati. La sceneggiatura del polacco Joe Esztehras è straordinariamente brillante, ben strutturata, dopo l’uscita di Basic Instinct sarà infatti, lo sceneggiatore più pagato di Hollywwod, cosa di non poco conto, considerando l’attuale sciopero degli sceneggiatori, che nell’ambito della produzione cinematografica, il più delle volte sono coloro i quali non vedono riconosciuti i loro meriti. Un film non solo eccitante, ma provocatorio, in cui all’amore eterosessuale, spinto all’accesso, si associa anche un torbido amore omosessuale, per la prima volta sugli schermi, in maniera cosi esplicita.

Dall’omicidio dell’ex cantante rock Johnny Boz iniziano le indagini, che vedono in Catherine Tramel, la principale indagata per l’assassinio, in quanto sua fidanzata ed ultima persona a vedere la vittima prima dell’efferato delitto. La Tramel pedinata dal detective Curran conduce una vita molto lussuosa e al contempo trasgressiva, frequenta strani soggetti e ha l’abitudine di non portare indumenti intimi. Curran ne rimane totalmente sedotto. La spirale di sesso e morte in cui verranno trascinati non li spaventa, in fondo Catherine e Nick non sono poi cosi diversi, come commenterà personalmente. Il regista Paul Verhoeven lascia poco spazio agli individualismi, accetta di lavorare solo con professionisti che siano disposti a fare esattamente ciò che egli desidera che facciano. Per questo motivo molti attori e attrici del calibro di Julia Roberts, Kim Basinger, chiamati per il casting, rifiutarono la parte una volta letto il copione. La pellicola è un cult del cinema erotico, a cui è seguito un sequel nel 2006, rivelatosi più un flop, che un successo al botteghino, diversamente dal suo precedessore.
Il film studiato in ogni dettaglio possiede un’attrattiva indefinibile, che consacra il regista e lo sceneggiatore tra gli europei sbarcati con successo “nell’olimpo Hollywoodiano”.
