Come tutti anche Ted è nato e cresciuto in una cittadina in cui tutto è di plastica, tutto è finto e non c'è vegetazione. In quel microambiente la vita scorre tranquilla e nessuno sente la mancanza del verde. Nessuno tranne la ragazza di cui Ted è perdutamente innamorato, lei farebbe di tutto per trovare un albero, lui farà di tutto per procurarglielo, andando a chiedere che fine abbiano fatto all'ultimo in grado di ricordare l'epoca in cui gli alberi erano presenti ovunque. A mettergli i bastoni fra le ruote è il magnate locale, lo spietato industriale che rifornisce la città di ossigeno in bottiglia e che non ha interesse ad un ritorno della fotosintesi clorofiliana.
Lorax, il guardiano della foresta è il quarto libro di Dr. Seuss ad arrivare sul grande schermo. Noto negli Stati Uniti per essere uno dei più grandi scrittori per l'infanzia ma meno celebre da noi, Dr. Seuss è autore di universi problematici, colorati, demenziali e sottilmente politici sempre diversi, ogni storia un mondo a sè che riflette tematiche particolari. In Lorax la matrice è l'ecologismo, tema scontato oggi ma molto meno quando nel 1971 la prima edizione del libro fu editata e criticata proprio per queste ragioni.
Ad occuparsi della trasposizione sono Chris Renaud e Kyle Balda della Illumination Entertainment, studio con base francese già responsabile di Cattivissimo me, con l'occhio supervisore del produttore Chris Meledandri, già responsabile per la Blue sky di un'altra trasposizione in computer grafica da Dr. Seuss: Ortone e il mondo dei Chi.
La trama e i dialoghi di Lorax vengono da un'epoca in cui i cartoni o i prodotti per l'infanzia non volevano a tutti i costi strizzare un occhio anche agli adulti, com'è pratica moderna, ma si rivolgevano con smaccante sincerità al solo pubblico infantile. Per questo anche oggi il pregio di quest'avventura ecologista è il modo in cui, preservando la sottile satira di Dr. Seuss, riesce a trattare con serietà, rispetto e onestà intellettuale il proprio pubblico d'elezione. Con un umorismo a tratti devastante per tempismo, trovate, ritmo e anticonvenzionalità, la Illumination Entertainment porta in sala un tour de force di dialoghi, corse e canzoni che non ricorda niente di già visto e nel divertire sembra essere il primo a divertirsi.
La forza moderna di un prodotto che per certi versi può suonare fuori dal tempo, sta così tutto nel non porsi limiti sui temi da affrontare, nel criticare atteggiamenti e nel presentare figure complesse e anticonvenzionali, dimostrando che la produzione per l'infanzia non si giudica dai contenuti quanto dai toni.
