| Descrizione | Il cavaliere oscuro (The Dark Knight) è un film del 2008 diretto da Christopher Nolan e basato su Batman, personaggio dei fumetti creato da Bob Kane e Bill Finger. La pellicola è il seguito di Batman Begins (2005), anch'esso diretto da Nolan, ed è stata preceduta dal film direct-to-video Il cavaliere di Gotham, raccolta di cortometraggi animati realizzati in stile anime, che coprono l'arco temporale tra i due lavori cinematografici.
In questo episodio della saga Bruce Wayne, ovvero Batman (Christian Bale), affiancato dal procuratore distrettuale Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) e dal commissario Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), si trova ad affrontare il criminale Joker (Heath Ledger). Nel cast figurano anche Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine e Morgan Freeman.
Una banca di Gotham City che ricicla denaro mafioso è assaltata da rapinatori al soldo del Joker, criminale sfregiato che si trucca come un clown e di cui si ignora l'identità. Questi si uccidono l'un l'altro ignari del piano che il loro capo aveva progettato fin dall'inizio: fuggire da solo con il bottino senza lasciare testimoni. Da quando Batman ha fatto la sua comparsa, Gotham sembra essere un posto migliore, con la malavita terrorizzata, ma anche con vigilantes improvvisati che imitano l'Uomo Pipistrello, il quale tuttavia disapprova tale operato e fa capire di non poter dividere la sua missione con nessuno. Sia il tenente James Gordon che il nuovo procuratore distrettuale Harvey Dent, fidanzato con l'assistente Rachel Dawes, amica di infanzia di Bruce Wayne, cercano senza successo di incastrare il boss Sal Maroni. Wayne, come uomo pubblico appoggia Dent, come Batman collabora con lui e Gordon per portare di fronte alla giustizia il crimine organizzato.
Il Joker compare ad una riunione dei capomafia, proponendo la morte di Batman come unica soluzione...
