Gus Lobel (Clint Eastwood) è un uomo che ha dedicato la sua vita allo scouting nel mondo del baseball, scovando innumerevoli talenti ma apparentemente realizzando poco altro nel corso della sua vita, che procede solitaria oramai da molti anni, se escludiamo il contatto con i colleghi. Dopo essere rimasto vedovo vent'anni prima, difatti, il suo rapporto con la sveglia figlia Mickey (Amy Adams) si è incrinato, portando quest'ultima a diffidare dal padre che l'ha, in qualche modo, “abbandonata” prima presso degli zii e poi in collegio. Una volta adulta, è una donna in carriera, avvocatessa di successo con, però, diversi problemi relazionali. Proprio nel momento più delicato della carriera di entrambi (il tramonto per l'uno e il decollo per l'altra) si ritrovano tuttavia nuovamente insieme e, mentre la ragazza aiuterà il padre nel seguire una giovane promessa, avranno tempo e modo per confrontarsi sul loro conflittuale rapporto. Tutto questo mentre il simpatico Johnny (Justin Timberlake), un tempo astro nascente della disciplina sportiva e ora aspirante scout e commentatore sportivo, proverà a farli riavvicinare, avvicinandosi egli stesso al cuore della bella Mickey...
