Trama:
La storia si svolge in un ipotetico mondo futuribile ("Da qualche parte nel Ventesimo Secolo" governato da meschinità e burocrazia. Il protagonista è Sam Lowry, un umile impiegato del
Ministero dell'Informazione che ha frequenti sogni ad occhi aperti dove vede se stesso salvare una misteriosa fanciulla, indossando un'armatura alata.
Un giorno a Sam viene dato l'incarico di correggere un errore di stampa di un file causato da una mosca incastrata in una stampante. Purtroppo l'errore ha già causato l'arresto, il
processo e l'esecuzione di un certo Archibald Buttle al posto di un ricercato terrorista chiamato Archibald "Harry" Tuttle. Quando Sam va a visitare la vedova del signor Buttle viene a
conoscenza di una ragazza chiamata Jill Layton, identica alla fanciulla che sogna. Jill è etichettata come alleata del terrorista per aver cercato di aiutare la signora Buttle e dare la
colpa agli stessi burocrati dell'ingiustizia...........
