La storia del film si chiarisce mediante una serie di flashback sui ricordi di Truman, alternati con la visione di alcuni telespettatori del mondo reale mentre guardano, più o meno con
interesse, il programma, diventato un vero e proprio fenomeno mediatico con tanto di merchandising; inoltre un servizio giornalistico spiega l'antefatto attraverso una doviziosa intervista
a Christof, il regista-demiurgo dello spettacolo, che illustra il successo dello show ottenuto in tutto il mondo.
Il punto di vista narrato è centrato sul protagonista e sulla sua graduale presa di coscienza nel vedere i suoi affetti più cari, genitori, moglie e amico del cuore, scolorare nei volti di
perfetti estranei.
Truman Burbank è un trentenne apparentemente pieno di vita e sempre sorridente che ignora d'essere l'attore protagonista di uno spettacolo televisivo, il Truman Show, un racconto sulla sua
stessa vita, ripresa in diretta sin dalla nascita, quando fu prelevato da una gravidanza indesiderata e "adottato" da un network televisivo...........
