Ray Charles al piano. Inizia lo show.
Le mani corrono lungo la tastiera. Bianco, nero, nero, bianco e di nuovo nero. Le combinazioni di tasti sono infinite, il ritmo coinvolge: la musica ti entra dentro per far vibrare l'anima. Non è importante che sia jazz, blues, gospel, country, rock'n'roll o rhythm'n'blues, ad emozionarci è lui, Ray Charles, la sua voce, il suo genio. Quando ancora i dischi vendevano secondo la bravura degli artisti, quando i musicisti non erano modelli riciclati e a scatenare una platea di spettatori erano le note e non i balletti, allora nacque il mito di Ray Charles Robinson.Un uomo cui il destino levò la vista perché non potesse sbagliare strada: il suo compagno di vita doveva essere il piano, e così è stato. Non furono però solo luci e successi. Ray e la famiglia, Ray e le donne, Ray e le leggi razziali, Ray e, soprattutto, la droga. Un percorso quest'ultimo, che una volta intrapreso ha poche vie di fuga e un'unica destinazione...

Iniziato a preparare con il placet di Ray Charles (è morto poi il 10 Giugno 2004), il film ci propone i primi circa 40 anni della vita del grande musicista. Un grande racconto, scevro di virtuosismi, che emoziona non meno delle sue tante canzoni approfondendo senza retorica e compassione le ombre di un passato tutt'altro che comune.
Il film è trainato da un Jamie Foxx a dir poco strepitoso. Il suo è un vero e proprio one-man-show che non tradisce il ricordo del vero Ray Charles ancora fresco nella memoria dello spettatore, ricalcaldone invece perfettamente tutti i contorni. Intorno a lui si muove un ottimo cast composto da attori finora di secondo piano del panorama hollywoodiano, tra cui la bravissima Kerry Washington nel ruolo della moglie dell'artista.
La splendida fotografia di Pawel Edelman e la regia convenzionale, ma apprezzabile di Taylor Hackford contribuiscono a creare quella giusta sensazione di realtà storica e leggenda che hanno fatto e faranno sempre di Ray Charles uno di quei personaggi immortali. A meno che l'uomo non decida in futuro di fare a meno della musica...
