RECENSIONE

Con "The Aviator", Martin Scorsese continua a raccontarci la sua America. Infatti, se con "Gangs of New York" ci dava la sua lettura della nascita dell'America, con questa sua ultima opera ne descrive la parabola dell'ascesa fino alle più alte vette del potere a cui consegue, ineffabile, il declino, ingrato frutto delle sommità raggiunte.

Il regista italoamericano lo fa raccontando la storia di Howard Hughes (Leonardo Di Caprio), una delle figure più controverse della storia americana del secolo passato. Magnate del petrolio, il giovane Hughes ha una passione per il volo e decide di investire le proprie risorse nella costruzione di velivoli sia commerciali che militari. Ma Hughes - che come dice Scorsese ha in sé le strambezze tipiche dei pionieri - nutre anche altre passioni: il cinema e le donne. Produce, nel 1930 il film più costoso della storia del cinema fino ad allora ("Gli angeli dell'inferno", costato 4 milioni di dollari), colleziona donne come fossero auto sportive. Tra queste annovera attrici del calibro di Katherine Hepburn (interpretata da una volitiva Cate Blanchet) e Ava Gardner (il volto è quello della bellissima Kate Backinsale). Ma come in tutti i bei sogni (e anche quello americano non fa sconti al botteghino) c'è il lato oscuro della medaglia. Qui è rappresentato dalla malattia che attanaglia Hughes. Una forma ossessiva compulsiva di una sindrome chiamata germofobia, probabilmente derivatagli dall'infanzia. Howard ha il terrore delle infezioni, si lava di continuo le mani, non tocca le posate altrui, beve solo latte da bottigliette ermeticamente sigillate. Una malattia che lo accompagnerà, aggravandosi, fino alla fine della sua vita avvenuta in un attico di un albergo di Las Vegas dove vi viveva come un recluso.

Scorsese - grazie anche all'opera del fido Dante Ferretti - ricostruisce maestosamente l'America dell'inizio degli anni '30 fino agli inizi degli anni '60: scenografie, costumi, musica restituiscono un'opera certamente grandiosa e completa. Nonostante ciò, però, confessiamo che il film stenta ad emozionare, forse proprio a causa della fredda perfezione della sua realizzazione. Certamente, non si può negare che la pellicola susciti un indubbio interesse sia nei bozzetti dei grandi attori del passato (oltre alle due attrici citate si vedono Errol Flynn - Jude Law, Jean Harlow - Gwen Stefani) sia nella raffigurazione della lotta economico-politica tra il nostro eroe e Juan Trippe (Alec Baldwin) il capo della Pan Am, concorrente della TWA di cui Hughes era diventato il maggior azionista. E forse, proprio nella descrizione dei complessi giochi politici, (Alan Alda interpreta il Senatore Brewster foraggiato dalla Pan Am per presentare una legge che favorisse gli interessi monopolistici della Pan Am), l'opera centra i momenti migliori.

Il film, fortemente voluto dallo stesso Di Caprio nelle vesti anche di produttore esecutivo, è comunque un leggendario affresco di un personaggio - definito dagli stessi realizzatori - come una maschera da tragedia greca, dalle mille sfaccettature e il cui potere ha finito per sopraffare.
