Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) è un giovano ricco con una reputazione da playboy. Stanco di portarsi a letto le solite ragazze comuni di Manhattan, decide di arrivare a scopi più alti.
La sua sorellastra Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar), studentessa molto popolare grazie alla sua fama di bravissima ragazza esemplare, religiosa e vergine di ferro (tutta una montatura per nascondere la sua perversa e lasciva personalità reale), gli dice di avere una sfida pronta per lui. Intende vendicarsi di Court Reynolds, suo ex fidanzato, dal quale è stata lasciata in favore dell'ingenua e innocente Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair). Per vendetta, Kathryn progetta di rendere Cecile la baldracca numero uno di New York, poiché Court ha ripetutamente sottolineato quanto lo attragga la sua innocenza ed inesperienza, e ha bisogno di Sebastian per condurla sulla strada della perdizione. Sebastian rifiuta dicendo che è fin troppo facile per uno come lui e le dice di avere una sfida molto più ardua da portare a termine.
Una ragazza di nome Annette (Reese Witherspoon) ha pubblicato un'intervista in cui dice di voler arrivare vergine al matrimonio. Kathryn e Sebastian fanno una scommessa.
