Tra le guglie del campanile della cattedrale di Notre Dame è confinato il campanaro deforme Quasimodo. Vent'anni prima il giudice Frollo, ossessionato dall'idea di ripulire la città dai gitani, aveva ucciso la madre di Quasimodo. Per questo venne punito con l'obbligo di prendersi cura del bambino. Da allora Quasimodo vive rinchiuso nel campanile sotto la sorveglianza del suo dispotico tutore, sognando di potersi unire alla gente che anima la piazza. Un giorno, durante la Festa dei Pazzi, Quasimodo trova il coraggio di uscire. Nella piazza conosce Esmeralda, la donna che cambierà la sua vita. Sensuale e sinuoso, il film ha una vitalità irruente e un'abilità sottile nel mescolare terrore, comicità e commozione. Tutto sospeso tra la cima del campanile e la piazza sottostante, sceneggiato senza lungaggini e sdolcinature. Geniale l'idea di animare tre gargoyles (i diavoli di pietra che ornano la cattedrale) e di farne i compagni comici di Quasimodo; magnifica l'invocazione dannata di Frollo (cui spetta già un posto tra i grandi cattivi della ditta).
