Washington assomiglia a Calcutta, sommersa di mendicanti. Solo che questi mendicanti hanno vestiti da 1.500 dollari". Così Michael Douglas alla figlia che gli chiede una descrizione della capitale degli Stati Uniti.
Grandi interpreti (e quindi grandi personaggi), guidati dalla illuminante regia di Steven Soderbergh (Sesso, Bugie e Videotape, Delitti e Segreti, Out of Sight, Erin Brockovich), navigano in questo film sul traffico della droga e sul mondo, anzi i mondi, che gli gravitano intorno.
Il film si compone di tre episodi che si intersecano tra di loro raccontando la storia di Javier Rodriguez (Benicio Del Toro) un incorruttibile poliziotto messicano e dei suoi sforzi per rimanere tale, dell'integro e conservatore giudice Robert Wakefield (Michael Douglas) messo a capo del nucleo governativo antidroga afflitto dal dramma familiare di avere una figlia tossicodipendente, e della vicenda di Helena (Catherine Zeta-Jones) che scopre improvvisamente che il proprio marito è un incallito narcotrafficante.
Il film è montato magistralmente, la sequenza delle vicende, nonostante l'inevitabile frammentazione del racconto, scorre liscia senza soluzione di continuità. Tutto ciò nonostante i registri narrativi delle tre storie siano molto differenti tra di loro. L'episodio messicano è fotografato con toni virati e girato con la telecamera a mano, nelle vicende del giudice Wakefield predomina il blu e tutto è caratterizzato da una vena intimista, la storia che vede protagonista la bella Helena è girata invece con i toni del telefilm di qualità (vedi "Sulle strade della California).
Gli attori danno tutti un'ottima prova di recitazione. Misurato ed efficace Michael Douglas, meravigliosamente drammatica la Zeta-Jones così sexy ed intrigante col pancione da mammina in attesa, strabiliante Benicio Del Toro, triste maschera in un gioco più grande di lui. Tra gli altri ricordiamo Dennis Quaid ed un sorprendente Tomas Milian (sì, proprio lui, "er monnezza" di Squadra Antifurto) nei panni di un generale messicano impegnato nella lotta, con metodi non proprio ortodossi, ai vari cartelli della droga messicani. Prova da incorniciare!!
Un bel thriller per tutti i gusti. (Das)
