In seguito ad un imprevisto durante il loro ultimo incarico, l'assassinio di un prete, due killer professionisti, Ray e Ken, vengono costretti dal loro boss, ad una vacanza forzata nell'accogliente città di Bruges in Belgio. Qui, i due, dovrebbero cercare di passare inosservati, finché non si calmano un pò le acque, ma, una serie di circostanze gli mette al centro di rocambolesche situazioni... Che non sia giunto il momento di cambiare vita...?
RECENSIONE
Dopo aver vinto l’Oscar nel 2006 con il cortometraggio “Six Shooter”, al regista e sceneggiatore inglese Martin McDonagh è stata offerta la grande opportunità del lungometraggio. Dal premiato lavoro si è portato dietro l’attore Brendan Gleeson e ha poi completato il cast con due attori di primo ordine: il compatriota Ralph Fiennes e l’irlandese Colin Farrell. Chiara la matrice europea del prodotto, sottolineata dall’ambientazione, che come potrete ben intuire dal titolo è Bruges. E’ lì infatti che i due sicari Farrell e Gleeson vengono mandati dal committente Fiennes a nascondersi dopo aver eseguito, non senza complicazioni, un omicidio. Chiaro che tutto non andrà come previsto e quello che sembrava, apparentemente, un soggiorno tranquillo in attesa che al di là della Manica si siano calmate le acque, si trasformerà in qualcos’altro.
Richiamando l’ironia beffarda dei Coen e quella più pulp di Tarantino, Kevin McDonagh riesce a realizzare un film avvincente e al contempo divertente. Il primo merito va dato alla sceneggiatura: le battute si rincorrono senza soluzione di sosta (sembra, per chi lo conosce, un film scritto da Shane Black), non c’è nessun passaggio narrativo, anche minuscolo e sul momento illusoriamente insignificante, che poi non verrà ripreso per dipanare la sceneggiatura (si pensi alle monetine tenute nella tasca), ma soprattutto c’è la grande capacità di giocare con gli stereotipi del film noir e d’azione senza diventare demenziale, ma riuscendo anche a lasciare anche un fondo di malinconia al tutto. La regia segue quanto già scritto riuscendo a ben enfatizzare i momenti comici e dando quella giusta connotazione di città misteriosa e affascinante, ma anche (alla lunga) noiosa, alla bella Bruges, protagonista della pellicola tanto quanto il cast. Allo stesso modo, ben curati sono i dettagli anche concettuali della storia (ad esempio, quando, dall’alto della torre, Ken fa finta con le dita di sparare a Ray si anticipa un tema che si svelerà, anche al personaggio stesso, solo successivamente), e grande attenzione vi è anche per non cadere nei soliti luoghi comuni e bloopers in cui cascano tante storie poliziesche (vedere Ralph Fiennes mettere dritta la mappa di Bruges è un momento di cinema straordinario). Ottima anche la direzione degli attori, tutti capaci di entrare in sintonia con il tono di un film che si prepara a diventare piccolo cult.
La frase: "Il purgatorio è quando non sei troppo male, ma neanche troppo bene. Come il Tottenham!".
