Un medico scozzese, inviato in Uganda, si scontrerà presto con le regole dettate da una delle più feroci dittature del ventesimo secolo e con il suo artefice, Idi Amin Dada. Diventando il medico personale del dittatore, avrà modo di vedere da vicino la crudeltà ed i mezzi utilizzati per esercitarla da colui che, appena salito al potere, fu considerato l'uomo che avrebbe portato l'Uganda a diventare un paese moderno e libero e rivelatosi poi come uno dei più spietati dittatori conosciuti al mondo
RECENSIONE
Basato sull'omonimo romanzo di Giles Foden, "L'ultimo re di Scozia" parte dal 1971, anno di ascesa al potere di Idi Amin, per raccontare la storia di un giovane medico scozzese, Nicholas Garrigan che partito inizialmente per l'Uganda con l'intento di aiutare la povera popolazione locale, si ritrova ad essere dottore e consigliere personale del terribile dittatore africano.
Nicholas e Amin. Due uomini attratti dal potere che ai nobili propositi non riescono, o non vogliono dare seguito. Il film si basa continuamente sul confronto tra questi due personaggi (lo scozzese del titolo infatti non è Nicholas, bensì Amin) sia in quanto persone che come emblemi di ciò che rappresentano.
Il nostro punto di vista è quello di Nicholas, l'occidentale che si reca in Africa "perché vuole aiutare". La sua superficialità è smaccata, chiara fin dall'inizio (non sa chi sia Obote, non consoce la situazione interna del paese in cui si è recato). Risulta una persona ingenua, che non si muove con cattiveria, ma che sostanzialmente non vede i problemi che lo circondano finché non vi si trova coinvolto in prima persona (ed infatti la "ribellione" scatterà nel momento in cui gli si toccherà un caro affetto, non prima). E' l'imperialismo coloniale occidentale: tanto cieco alle esigenze dei popoli africani finché possono dargli profitti, tanto contraddittorio e severo nel momento in cui si rende conto che il rapporto creatosi non va d'accordo con la propria, "famosa" vocazione liberale. Ci si sporca le mani di sangue (Nicholas nel container), ma si fa finta di nulla finché conviene.
In Amin la contraddittorietà è più celata. E' un uomo carismatico, che affascina chiunque gli si trovi accanto. Amin è colore, è ballo, è festa (così ci viene presentato all'inizio), ma è anche quello che tiene i mitra vicino a sé mentre la gente ne acclama il nome. Amin è l'Africa, è la bellezza e al contempo la ferocia di una terra che non è la nostra. Misterioso, non si sa mai come possa reagire ad un qualsiasi evento. Un'ambiguità resa alla perfezione dall'interpretazione di un grandioso Forest Whitaker e alle scelte del regista Kevin McDonald, che nel descriverlo indugia molto sui primi piani (quello sugli occhi ad inizio film, riassume tutto il personaggio), enfatizza sudore e tic nervosi, e quando sta in scenda da solo, a differenza di quanto accade per il medico scozzese, lo riprende camera a mano (dando instabilità all'immagine).
Finché Nicholas è vittima del suo appeal gli orrori non sono mai mostrati direttamente, ma solo evocati (o dai telegiornali o dai racconti delle spie inglesi), così come la leggenda che lo vuol cannibale: in ben due occasioni gli si fa parlare di cibo (come metafora per la sua semplicità all'inizio, e alla festa del suo insediamento), lasciando intuire che ci sia qualcosa da dire, ma senza approfondire.
Un lavoro che incede quindi per sottrazione, non dicendo mai ciò che uno spettatore con un minimo di memoria storica già dovrebbe sapere, ma mettendo in luce lo sfondo che permise ad un personaggio del genere di restare al governo fino al 1980 (e quello che seguì, sempre di Obote fino al 1986, fu analogo per ferocia).
Un film bello, scritto bene e ancor meglio girato da quel Kevin McDonald, già autore dello splendido "La morte sospesa". Esterni completamente girati in Scozia e Uganda (che danno anche circolarità al racconto: si inizia con un lago scozzese, si finisce con un'inquadratura analoga di un lago ugandese). E così dopo i recenti "Hotel Rwanda" e "Blood Diamond", Hollywood dimostra di essere sempre più interessata alla storia africana. Speriamo che non sia una coincidenza.
