TRAMA

Hal, per non deludere il defunto padre, è in cerca di una ragazza bellissima. Ma sotto l'effetto di un'ipnosi si innamora di Rosemary, una donna obesa e riservata, che lui vede bellissima. Quando l'amico superficiale Mauricio lo fa uscire dall'ipnosi, Hal si trova alla vera realtà di Rosemary. Che fare? Per Hal è arrivato il momento didecidere, da solo, il suo futuro...

RECENSIONE

Hal Larsen (Jack Black / "Alta Fedeltà" è il classico ragazzo americano perennemente "allupato" che, nonostante un fisico non proprio palestrato ed uno spessore culturale praticamente nullo, ambisce soltanto a donne bellissime, anche se, ad onor del vero, non richiede da parte loro la minima intelligenza. Degno compare di Hal è Mauricio (Jason Alexander protagonista della serie TV "Seinfeld" con il quale condivide non solo le uscite notturne, ma anche l'appartamento.
La vita di Hal è però ad una inconsapevole svolta; rimasto intrappolato in un ascensore con Tony Robbins, esperto di autostima, Hal ne uscirà rinnovato, dotato di un irresistibile fascino verso il gentil sesso. La nuova situazione lo rende euforico e lo porta all'incontro della sua vita con Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow / "Sliding Doors" una bellissima ragazza con la quale Hal riesce ad avere una perfetta intesa. Tutto perfetto insomma... non proprio, Rosemary pesa più di 120 chili, ma grazie ad una sorta di ipnosi subita da Hal, lui la vede come una bellissima donna (la Paltrow appunto).
Mauricio è quindi convinto che il suo amico sia preda di una forma di malocchio ed è deciso a farlo rinsavire, ma cosa succederà quando Hal il "fine esteta" scoprirà di essere fidanzato con una "balena", che peraltro è la figlia del suo capo?

La cattiveria pungente dei Farrelly ("Io, Me & Irene" trasuda costantemente dai dialoghi e dalle situazioni in alcuni momenti al limite della decenza, ma riesce sempre a strappare il sorriso allo spettatore anche perché fa leva su tutta una serie di retaggi che ben si conoscono, ma dei quali spesso non si parla per un distorto senso del pudore. I registi prendono di mira tutti gli stereotipi sulla bellezza e li rovesciano arricchendoli anche di una morale un pò facile e fuori luogo considerando che viene da due maestri dello sfruttamento delle debolezze umane: la vera bellezza va ricercata nell'animo e non nel "guscio" esteriore. Francamente mi piacerebbe vedere se nella realtà Hal avrebbe concesso ad una persona come Rosemary la possibilità di farsi conoscere: mai nella vita!

In ogni caso i protagonisti sono all'altezza, la Paltrow, oltre ad aver indossato un apposito costume in lattice per apparire come se pesasse 120 chili, impresa non da poco, lo ha utilizzato nel suo albergo per vedere la reazione delle persone ed immedesimarsi al meglio nel personaggio. Anche Jack Black ha preso molto seriamente questa occasione, che potrebbe lanciarlo nel firmamento hollywoodiano come protagonista dopo diversi ruoli da comprimario; nel complesso sembra all'altezza anche se da il meglio in personaggi un pò più al limite e meno ordinari.

La frase: "Boston... la città dei fagioli, i frutti musicali. Più ne mandi giù, più scoreggi."

Curiosità: Si parla del problema della popolazione del Kirbati in cui più di 100.000 donne e bambini hanno bisogno di aiuti umanitari. È bene ricordare che l'intera popolazione del Kirbati consta di 92.000 unità.

Indicazioni:
Sicuramente un film che vi farà ridere anche grazie a qualche volgarità. (Valerio Salvi)
