Pensati inizialmente per dare una possibilità ai meno fortunati (disabili, paralizzati, mutilati ecc...) ben presto oltre il 98% dell'umanità decide di usarli, motivandone la necessità soprattutto per motivi di sicurezza (in un normale incidente automobilistico, si distruggerebbe solo il robot) anche se spesso i motivi sono in realtà estetici: un surrogato non deve andare in palestra, può essere più giovane e può essere pure del sesso desiderato. Contemporaneamente si crea anche una minoranza di persone che condanna e rifiuta l'uso dei surrogati e attraverso il loro leader, il Profeta, definiscono la vita attraverso un surrogato come un inganno................
