In una valle perduta del Far West americano, intorno al 1900, alcuni mandriani, invece che indiani, scoprono sauri preistorici giganteschi che si sono preservati attraverso milioni d'anni. Dinosauri,
pterodattili e altri mostri, infestano la valle, assaltando i mandriani che cercano di scappare davanti ad una morte certa. Ma questi eroi, con il loro "lazo", invece che una vacca, riescono a catturare il
tremendo allosauro, chiamato Gwangi e lo trasportano in una vicina cittadina, dove lo esibiscono ad un grande rodeo. Il mostro però, riesce a liberarsi e dopo aver lottato strenuamente contro un elefante di un
circo e averlo ucciso a colpi di zanne, si dirige nel centro cittadino, seminando il panico fra i cittadini, che si rifugiano in una grande cattedrale....
