Foo Fighters Discography And Rare 1992-2011
I Foo Fighters si formano alla fine del 1994 dall'unione dell'ex-batterista dei Nirvana Dave Grohl, adesso alla chitarra e voce, con Pat Smear e William Goldsmith, entrambi già insieme nei Sunny Day Real Estate. Il loro singolo di debutto, "This is a call", esce nell'estate del 1995 e mette in mostra delle ottime doti di composizione e di solidità a livello strumentale. Ancora meglio fa il secondo singolo estratto dall'album FOO FIGHTERS, intitolato "I'll stick around" e, secondo alcuni, dedicato con un po' di cattiveria alla vedova di Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love.
L'immediatezza nella musica del gruppo è presente anche nel secondo album dei Foo Fighters. Il disco è THE COLOUR & THE SHAPE, uscito nel 1997 e ripubblicato successivamente con l'inclusione di quattro cover non incluse nella precedente edizione. La crescente tensione fra Grohl e Goldsmith porta alla sostituzione di quest'ultimo con Taylor Hawkins. Anche Smear abbandona, sostituito per un breve periodo da Franz Stahl. Nel 1999 arriva nei negozi THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE, che segue una direzione più mainstream.
Alla formazione si aggiunge il chitarrista Chris Shiflett, ex-No Use For A Name. Il successivo ONE BY ONE esce nel 2002 e segna il ritorno a un suono più duro. Nel frattempo, Grohl registra come batterista con i Queens Of The Stone Age, nell'album SONGS FOR THE DEAF.
Dopo quasi tre anni, arriva IN YOUR HONOR, disco inizialmente nato come progetto acustico di Grohl, che poi si evolve in doppio album, un “unplugged” e uno rock.
Segue un doppio tour, prima elettrico nel 2005, poi acustico nel 2006. Per l'autunno viene prima annunciato un “best of” con inediti, poi esce invece SKIN AND BONES, disco estratto dal tour acustico pubblicato anche in DVD. Per un nuovo disco di inediti bisogna attendere il 2007: nell'autunno esce ECHOES, SILENCE, PATIENCE AND GRACE, anticipato dal singolo “The pretender”. Seguono un DVD dal vivo a Wembley e un greatest hits. Per un nuovo disco di inediti bisogna attendere il 2011, quando arriva WASTING LIGHT, che vede Grohl riunirsi con l'altro ex-Nirvana Krist Novoselic.
