Episodio 1 - Il popolo più felice della terra (1989): Hermann Simon e Clarissa Lichtblau si incontrano a Berlino dopo 17 anni, la storica sera del 9 novembre 1989, durante i festeggiamenti per l’abbattimento del Muro. Hermann è diventato un affermato direttore d’orchestra, Clarissa una cantante lirica. I due, cominciata una nuova relazione, decidono di andare a vivere insieme e di far ristrutturare, a tale scopo, una vecchia casa di montagna vicino a Schabbach, il paese di Hermann...
