Il film è ambientato a Richmond, Virginia, nel 1976. Una coppia di giovani sposi, Norma e Arthur, riceve una piccola scatola di legno con un pulsante rosso da un signore che si presenta con il nome di Steward.
Avranno ventiquattro ore di tempo per decidere se premere il pulsante o meno. Se lo premono, dice loro Steward, una persona che non conoscono morirà, ma riceveranno un milione di dollari; se non lo premono,
restituiranno la scatola e nulla accadrà. La coppia dopo una serie di disavventure, quali la perdita della possibilità di iscrivere il figlio ad una scuola prestigiosa e l'impossibilità del marito dell'essere
ammesso al programma spaziale quale astronauta, decide di premere il pulsante. I due ricevono come promesso il denaro, ma la loro vita viene invasa da minacce e presenze inquietanti. In realtà Steward non è
umano, ma un corpo che ospita una misteriosa entità aliena (Steward è morto dopo essere stato colpito da un fulmine durante la trasmissione dei dati dalla sonda Viking). L'essere sta conducendo un esperimento
sul genere umano per testare la sua capacità di rinunciare ai propri desideri egoistici per il bene comune della specie....................
Storyline
Norma and Arthur Lewis, a suburban couple with a young child, receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences. A mysterious stranger delivers the message that the box
promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. However, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world, someone they don't know.
With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the cross-hairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity
