La storia del giovane Johnny Cash e del suo turbolento rapporto d’amore con June Carter Cash. La storia ha inizio in Arkansas durante l’epoca della Depressione e mostra le origini del suono di Cash, quando era ancora semplicemente il figlio di un mezzadro, passando poi attraverso i suoi tour scatenati con pionieri del rock and roll come Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis e Waylon Jennings, e terminando la sua corsa con l’indimenticabile concerto del 1968 alla prigione di Folsom.

RECENSIONE

Johnny Cash è, insieme a Elvis Prestley e Jerry Lee Lewis, uno dei maggiori e più importanti musicisti di rock'n roll degli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta. Un film che parla della sua vita difficile e, soprattutto, della sua storia d'amore con la controversa cantante June Carter, è una gradita sorpresa e va a riempire quasi un vuoto cinematografico. "Quando l'amore brucia l'anima", pellicola che ripercorre la storia del cantante, è diretto ambiziosamente dal regista James Mangold è può fregiarsi di aver già conquistato tre statuette dei Golden Globe che, come si dice in questi casi, fungono da buon biglietto da visita per la corsa agli Oscar. Le tre statuette sono state assegnate rispettivamente per le categorie quali: miglior film, miglior attore protagonista e migliore attrice protagonista. Niente male davvero, specialmente se si pensa che sono per attori e regista le loro prime statuette davvero degne di nota della loro pur indiscutibilmente importante carriera.

A vestire i panni di Johnny Cash è un sofferto Joaquin Phoenix, ricordato per la sua parte dell'imperatore Comodo ne "Il Gladiatore". Tra droghe e canzoni che inneggiano alla libertà per i detenuti d'America, Phoenix si rende vivo e partecipe, ambizioso quasi come lo è il film e sicuramente come è il personaggio che interpreta. Intenso. I panni della giovane June Carter sono invece affidati alla brava quanto inaspettata Reese Witherspoon, vista ne "Una bionda in carriera", soprattutto dedita al genere comico della commedia. La sua interpretazione è in effetti particolarmente intrigante e credibile, degna di un'attrice già navigata ed esperta. Sorpresa. Inutile dire che il film ruota letteralmente intorno a queste due figure e che quindi, di conseguenza, il resto del cast si adegua, con l'unica eccezione del buon Robert Patrick, maturo per la parte del padre del protagonista. Stoico.

Buone, ottime, interpretazioni per un film che, se invece analizzato al di fuori di queste, risulta purtroppo senza il giusto mordente. La storia di Johnny Cash è sì affascinante, ma viene raccontata in modo fin troppo usuale dalla pellicola di Mangold, che intende soffermarsi più sugli abusi di droga e sui concerti, piuttosto che sul percorso emotivo e di crescita caratteriale del cantante. Insomma si ha la sensazione procedendo nel film che alcuni aspetti della vita di Johnny non vengono sufficientemente approfonditi come la sua amicizia con i già citati Prestley e Lewis, o i testi anarchici delle sue canzoni.
Insomma un film che comunque si lascia vedere senza remore, ma che forse può essere consigliato più agli amanti dei "polpettoni" sentimentali, piuttosto che ai curiosi che intendono affacciarsi davvero ad una delle figure "ribelli" della storia musicale americana.
