RECENSIONE

Ci sono alcuni film che non sono solo opere di rilievo per la loro qualità cinematografica, ma anche per il messaggio sociale che contengono, assumendo così una duplice valenza. “Il buio oltre la siepe”, diretto da Robert Mulligan e tratto dall’omonimo romanzo premio Pulitzer di Harper Lee, è certamente uno di questi, grazie alla lezione di civiltà che professò alla sua uscita, in un’America dove vigeva ancora la segregazione razziale. Da allora di acqua sotto i ponti sembra esserne passata molta (vedi l’elezione di Barack Obama), ma lo spettacolo non ha perso certo di significato.

La storia dell’avvocato Atticus Finch e dei suoi due figli, difatti, non è solo il triste ritratto di un paese profondamente razzista (siamo nell’Alabama degli anni ’30), ma anche un sapiente racconto di formazione, che sottolinea gli effetti quasi sempre deleteri dei pregiudizi, di qualsiasi natura essi siano, poggiando su una serie di significativi personaggi. Il principale è Atticus, eletto dall’American Film Institute come il più grande eroe cinematografico americano, che si contraddistingue per la sua audacia sempre accompagnata dall’umiltà; ma non sono meno importanti figure marginali come quella di Boo Radley, emarginato perché folle, e che invece fuoriesce dal “buio oltre la siepe” evitando che una follia abbia luogo.

Tre i premi Oscar vinti dalla pellicola: miglior attore protagonista per Gregory Peck, che non colpì solo l’Academy con la sua sentita interpretazione ma anche l’autrice del romanzo, che lo premiò con l’orologio di suo padre; miglior sceneggiatura non originale ad Horton Foote; miglior scenografia in bianco e nero. Meritano menzione anche l’equilibrata regia di Robert Mulligan, la curata fotografia di Russell Harlan e le calzanti musiche di Elmer Bernstein, per un classico che fra i tanti pregi ha anche quello di aver lanciato Robert Duvall sul grande schermo (nel ruolo del misterioso Boo).
