Se l’Italia è la patria indiscussa del melodramma, è altrettanto innegabile che gli Stati Uniti sono stati, e lo sono tutt’ora, i padroni indiscussi del musical! George Cukor regista capace, come pochi, di mescolare e dosare raffinatezza e divertimento, nel 1964 mise le mani su “My fair lady”, musical del 1956 di Alan Jay Lerner e Frederic Loewe (che vide Julie Andrews nei panni dell’interprete femminile principale), tratto a sua volta dall'opera del 1914 “Pigmalione” del drammaturgo George Bernard Shaw. Storia di un glottologo britannico, il professor Higgins (Rex Harrison), che decide di scommettere con l'amico Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White) di riuscire a trasformare, entro sei mesi, la umile fioraia Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) in una signora elegante. Dopo estenuanti tentativi ed un fallimento iniziale, all'ippodromo con tutti i signori più illustri, Eliza viene apprezzata per i modi e l'eleganza dall'alta società londinese. Concluso l'esperimento la fioraia dovrebbe tornare al suo contesto sociale, ma i cambiamenti avvenuti e l'innamoramento verso il suo mentore Higgins, costringono Eliza a fare una scelta diversa. Il film si aggiudicò ben otto Oscar: Miglior film, regia, Miglior attore protagonista Rex Harrison, scene e costumi realizzati da Cecil Beaton, Harry Stradling per la fotografia, André Previn per l’adattamento musicale e George Groves per la colonna sonora. Esclusa persino dalle candidature agli Oscar fu, invece, Audrey Hepburn, complice il fatto che venne doppiata nelle scene di canto da Marni Nixon. Nonostante ciò l’attrice dimostra una bravura ineccepibile, dove grazia ed eleganza, sono il tratto inconfondibile della sua recitazione, ma anche lo strumento con il quale si è fatta largo nel dorato mondo dello Star System. Lontano dagli eccessi edulcorati del musical classico hollywoodiano, “My fair lady” è un concentrato di satira “socialmente impegnata”, leitmotiv di un industria che negli anni Sessanta vede il progredire dell’emancipazione.
