Prima di ritirarsi dal giro, un trafficante di droga, decide di concludere ancora qualche lavoretto. Purtroppo, però, i colpi si rivelano duri da portare a compimento e non sarà così semplice per lui chiudere con la vita passata.

RECENSIONE

Una delle caratteristiche più tipiche della società inglese è la stratficazione in classi, con sfumature spesso appena percettibili. E secondo Matthew Vaughn, regista di The Pusher, lo stesso principio si può applicare anche al mondo della criminalità, secondo la metafora della torta a strati (il titolo in originale è infatti Layer cake). In questo caso è un uomo d'affari senza nome (interpretato da Daniel Craig) a mostrarci cosa voglia dire vivere in un mondo fatto di loschi traffici di droga e violenza, condito per di più da un mal riposto senso dell'onore. Lo spacciatore, anzi, il mediatore cui si riferisce il titolo vorrebbe uscire di scena dopo un ultimo lavoro, ma come sempre accade nulla va come preventivato.

Vaughn non è nuovo alla descrizione di ambienti criminali, almeno come produttore di Lo strappo - The snatch. Il suo intento in questo The pusher, che rappresenta il suo esordio alla regia, è quello di descrivere la complessità del mondo criminale e di come ai livelli più alti questo sia governato più dall'intelligenza e dalla capacità di mediazione piuttosto che dalle armi e dalla forza bruta. La sceneggiatura è firmata da J. J. Connolly, autore del romanzo The Layer Cake (tradotto in italiano con il titolo L'ultima partita) da cui è tratto il presente film. Il lavoro sulla sceneggiatura ha richiesto l'eliminazione di diverse situazioni presenti nel romanzo, e forse anche per questo la trama del film sembra densa di avvenimenti e di complicazioni, quasi al limite della comprensibilità. Tuttavia la regia di Vaughn è sicura e funzionale a quanto accade sullo schermo, ed è sicuramente molto accattivante il piano sequenza iniziale, in cui il personaggio rivela il proprio punto di vista sul mondo del crimine. Ottimo il cast, a partire da Daniel Craig, fino all'acclamatissimo Michael Gambon nel ruolo del boss della mala Eddie Temple.

The Pusher è un esordio quanto meno interessante da parte di Vaughn, e lascia ben sperare per il terzo episodio degli X-men, che con ogni probabilità lo vedrà dietro alla macchina da presa. Ma a volte questo film dà la sensazione di essere una torta portata ad una lievitazione eccessiva. Con tutti i pericoli del caso.

La frase: "Diamo alla gente quello che vuole, divertimento oggi, rincoglionimento domani".
