[size=120]Manipulation of time and space has always been a subject of the rage in video games. Thus, on two feet, I can think of Braid, Timesplitters, Timeshift, Prince of Persia, Legacy of Kain and who knows how many there are.
Even Mother Russia seems to have caught the imagination of many software companies and so, after our recent Metro 2033 (which was just announced the sequel), here comes Singularity, developed by Raven Software, a talented group that in recent years seemed to have now finally submitted the Marvel universe.
The list of titles made by this team, however, shows a certain attitude to the FPS ... Soldier of Fortune mean anything? Ok, more recently there was also the Wolfenstein certainly not exciting, but because as biased?
Recorders and notes scattered everywhere possible to find out more details on the disaster that hit this place in 1955.
In fact I must admit to having been pleasantly surprised by this Singularity, a game that I had never given much hope. The guys at Raven seem to have learned from past mistakes and have a packed first-person shooter of rank, which gives a nod to the style "retro" revived by Bioshock, adding a unique feature that provides a new interpretation of the manipulation time.
The beginning is unfortunately not the most original. After a chapeau that speaks of a mysterious new element, the E-99, discovered and exploited by the Russians to counter the U.S. nuclear superpower, we find ourselves in a helicopter headed for the island of Katorga-12, the 'only place where you can extract the mysterious and powerful mineral. Guess what happens afterwards?
Exactly! A massive explosion hurls the helicopter and all its crew ... including you. Easy to see that among the few survivors there is just the main character, Captain Renko, who will be entrusted with a mission that probably would never have accepted, had he not been forced by events. After escaping the onslaught of mysterious creatures that inhabit the island, our friend is approached by a girl who reminded me of the Alyx Vance of Half-Life 2.
The story begins to take shape. It turns out that something in the research of E-99 did not go the right way and that the inhabitants of Katorga-12 were exterminated by the effects of the new element. The lucky ones, at least, because all the others still live there and have lost anything coming close to the human race.
La manipolazione del tempo e dello spazio è sempre stata un argomento di gran moda nei videogiochi. Così, su due piedi, mi vengono in mente Braid, Timesplitters, Timeshift, Prince of Persia, Legacy of Kain e chissà quanti altri ce ne sono.
Anche la Madre Russia sembra aver catturato l'immaginario di parecchie software house e così, dopo il recentissimo Metro 2033 (di cui è stato appena annunciato il sequel), ecco arrivare Singularity, sviluppato da Raven Software, talentuoso gruppo che negli ultimi anni sembrava essersi ormai definitivamente inoltrato nell'universo Marvel.
La lista di titoli realizzati da questo team rivela però una certa attitudine agli FPS... vi dice niente Soldier of Fortune? Ok, più recentemente c'è stato anche il non certo esaltante Wolfenstein, ma perché partire prevenuti?
Registratori e note sparse ovunque permettono di scoprire sempre più dettagli sul disastro che colpì questo luogo nel 1955.
Devo ammettere infatti di essere rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso da questo Singularity, un gioco a cui non avevo mai dato molte speranze. I ragazzi di Raven sembrano aver imparato dagli errori del passato e hanno confezionato uno sparatutto in soggettiva di rango, che strizza l'occhio allo stile “retrò” riportato in auge da Bioshock, aggiungendo un elemento originale che fornisce una nuova interpretazione della manipolazione temporale.
L'inizio non è purtroppo dei più originali. Dopo un cappello introduttivo che parla di un fantomatico nuovo elemento, l'E-99, scoperto e sfruttato dai russi per contrastare lo strapotere atomico statunitense, ci si ritrova all'interno di un elicottero diretti verso l'isola di Katorga-12, l'unico luogo in cui è possibile estrarre il misterioso e potentissimo minerale. Indovinate cosa succede subito dopo?
Esatto! Una gigantesca esplosione fa precipitare l'elicottero e tutto il suo equipaggio... voi compresi. Facile intuire che tra i pochi superstiti ci sia proprio il protagonista, il capitano Renko, a cui verrà affidata una missione che probabilmente non avrebbe mai accettato, se non fosse stato costretto dagli eventi. Dopo essere scampato all'assalto delle misteriose creature che popolano l'isola, il nostro amico viene avvicinato da una fanciulla che mi ha ricordato l'Alyx Vance di Half-Life 2.
La storia inizia a delinearsi. Si scopre che qualcosa nelle ricerche dell'E-99 non è andata nel verso giusto e che gli abitanti di Katorga-12 sono stati sterminati dagli effetti del nuovo elemento. I più fortunati, almeno, perché tutti gli altri vivono ancora lì e hanno perso qualsiasi elemento che li avvicini alla razza umana.[/size]
