Fred Claus é il fratello di Nicholas Claus (Babbo Natale), ma al contrario di Nicholas che si può dire essere perfetto, con un carattere d'oro e impegnato a fare felici tutti i bambini del mondo, Fred é un fannullone che ora si trova in difficoltà finanziarie. Nicholas, nonostante il parere contrario della moglie, é disposto ad aiutarlo, a patto però, che si metta a lavorare nella fabbrica di giocattoli dove operano gli elfi. Fred accetta, ma il rischio é molto grande, potrebbe rovinare la festa più bella dell'anno, quella che tutti aspettano...

RECENSIONE

Alle volte avere un fratello può essere una cosa antipatica. E’ il caso di Fred Claus, fratello maggiore del più famoso Nicholas, conosciuto anche come Babbo Natale o Santa Claus. I due non si parlano più da anni, ma quando a Fred servono cinquanta mila dollari per aprire una sala giochi davanti Wall Strett, l’unica persona a cui può chiedere aiuto è proprio suo fratello Nicholas. Quest’ultimo accetta, ma ad una sola condizione: che nel prossimo Natale lo aiuterà a preparare i doni per i bambini...
Dopo lo scoppiettante “Due single a nozze” David Dobkin torna dietro la cinepresa per cimentarsi con le questioni natalizie. E lo fa proponendo un soggetto affatto scontato, arricchito semmai da attori bravissimi come Vince Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, Kathy Bates, e Kevin Spacey. Anche se un pò sfilacciato sul piano della continuità narrativa, "Fred Claus" propone idee spassose e sketch irriverenti. Su tutti spiccano due momenti: il primo in cui Fred si reca al consultorio per fratelli bistrattati, trovandosi a consolare le “versioni povere” di Sly Stallone, Bill Clinton e William Baldwin (quello vero!); e il secondo in cui Kevin Spacey (già Lex Luthor nel blockbuster “Superman”) rivela a Santa Claus di aver sempre desiderato un mantello rosso come quello del supereroe dei fumetti. Insomma, malgrado si abbia la sensazione di aver di fronte un film che non riesce ad amalgamare bene l’impasto narrativo, un pò troppo lungo e a tratti fracassone, “Fred Claus” convince, intriso com’è di comicità surreale.
Degli attori abbiamo già accennato, ma due nomi meritano un trattamento speciale: Kevin Spacey, la cui interpretazione, oltre a confermare il talento di un attore completo, dona alla pellicola una sferzata intrigante; e Paul Giamatti, attore che negli ultimi anni è andato comparendo sempre di più confermando di volta in volta le sue qualità attoriali. Entrambi, comunque, straordinariamente versatili, convincenti, e mai stancanti.

“Fred Claus - Un fratello sotto l’albero” è una gradevole commedia di Natale. Forse non perfetta, ma originale e scorrevole.
