TRAMA


I Jets e gli Squali sono due bande rivali che si contendono il territorio a West Side, un quartiere di New York. La rivalit? diventa pi? aspra quando Tony dei Jets si innamora di Maria sorella del leader degli Squali. Ma l'amore trai due viene messo in discussione quando il fratello di Maria perde la vita in uno scontro con il capo dei Jets..








RECENSIONE

Riff ? il capo dei Jets, Bernardo degli Sharks. Tra le bande rivali si prepara una dichiarazione di guerra. Quando nasce, sincero e totalizzante, l'amore tra Maria, sorella di Bernardo, e Tony, il migliore amico di Riff, la situazione precipita e la battaglia ha inizio, vana, scorretta, fatale.
Ispirato allo spettacolo che aveva debuttato a Broadway qualche anno prima, nel 1957, West Side Story, codiretto da Jerome Robbins e Robert Wise, rivoluziona, nel 1961, l'universo del film musicale. Lontano dalla favola e dai fondali dipinti a pastello, il film inscena una vicenda tragica, che ripercorre con qualche (fondamentale) eccezione il "Romeo e Giulietta" di Shakespeare, ma lo traspone nel West Side di New York, dove le gang giovanili si scontrano in nome dell'odio razziale e del possesso della terra (un cortile di cemento, un campo di pallacanestro, due marciapiedi). I Jets e gli Sharks, rispettivamente indigeni e portoricani, lungi dal sentirsi tutti insieme appassionatamente americani, si provocano a vicenda e, accecati dall'orgoglio, si spingono oltre il limite. Una giovane donna, Maria, nata a Portorico ma ansiosa di vivere negli Stati Uniti, incarna l'unico lume di speranza, ma ? un futuro che nasce sulle ceneri di un amore sepolto anzitempo e sulle macchie di sangue versato.
Grazie alle straordinarie coreografie di Leonard Bernstein, tutto, nel film, ? ballo, canto, movimento, persino la passeggiata dei Jets nel loro quartiere o le sequenze di lotta. La citt? di New York ? protagonista assoluta e insieme spettatrice impotente di ci? che accade sul suo suolo, alla faccia del mito della tolleranza e della statua della libert?.
Dieci i premi Oscar meritatamente conquistati, tra cui miglior film, regia, scenografia, coreografia, costumi, montaggio, colonna sonora. Notevoli persino i titoli di testa, affidati alla matita di Saul Bass. Nelle orecchie restano, a lungo, le note di "Tonight", "Maria", "America", negli occhi lo sguardo dell'eroina, Natalie Wood.   (Marianna Cappi)
