Il 17 giugno 1972, a Washington, cinque persone vengono arrestate per essersi introdotte nel quartier generale del Partito Democratico, nell’Hotel Watergate; uno degli scassinatori è un membro del comitato per la rielezione del Presidente Richard Nixon. Due cronisti del Washington Post, Bob Woodward e Carl Bernstein, decidono di indagare sulla vicenda, fino a scoprire un coinvolgimento diretto della Casa Bianca.
Nell’estate del 1972, la vicenda in seguito soprannominata “scandalo Watergate” balzò al centro dell’attenzione dell’opinione pubblica americana, diventando ben presto il più clamoroso evento di cronaca dell’epoca; due anni più tardi, il 9 agosto 1974, il Presidente repubblicano Richard Nixon rassegnava le proprie dimissioni, dopo essere stato accusato di abuso di potere e di aver tentato di ostacolare il Congresso. A rendere noto il più grande scandalo politico nell’intera storia americana furono due giornalisti del Washington Post, Bob Woodward e Carl Bernstein, che non esitarono ad indagare sul collegamento fra gli arresti del Watergate e la Casa Bianca, portando alla luce le responsabilità di Nixon e del suo staff. L’inchiesta sul caso Watergate è stata raccontata da Woodward e Bernstein in un famoso libro-reportage, che nel 1976 è stato portato al cinema dal regista Alan J. Pakula in un celebre film intitolato “Tutti gli uomini del presidente”.
La pellicola, sceneggiata da William Goldman, ricostruisce in maniera estremamente dettagliata le varie fasi dell’indagine condotta dal Washington Post nei due anni compresi fra l’inizio del Watergate e le dimissioni di Nixon. Interpretato da due attori del calibro di Robert Redford e Dustin Hoffman nei rispettivi ruoli di Woodward e Bernstein, “Tutti gli uomini del presidente” si è rivelato un enorme successo di pubblico (65 milioni di dollari d’incasso negli Stati Uniti) ed ha ottenuto quattro premi Oscar per la sceneggiatura, la scenografia, il sonoro e per il miglior attore non protagonista al veterano Jason Robards Jr, memorabile nella parte del redattore esecutivo Benjamin C. Bradlee. Nel rielaborare la cronaca di uno dei periodi più controversi mai vissuti dagli Stati Uniti, Pakula si attiene scrupolosamente ai fatti reali e non indugia in facili spettacolarizzazioni, riuscendo allo stesso tempo ad infondere alla storia narrata un ritmo da thriller politico.
L’atmosfera di profonda incertezza di quegli anni è resa benissimo dai toni notturni della fotografia di Gordon Willis, mentre l’eccellente scenografia ha ricostruito perfettamente la redazione del Washington Post, all’interno della quale un manipolo di giornalisti porta avanti il proprio lavoro con quotidiano professionismo. Pakula non ha bisogno di alcuna enfasi per sviluppare sullo schermo l’intreccio del libro di Woodward e Bernstein, con una pellicola che ci mostra l’importanza di una stampa libera, indipendente da qualsiasi potere politico e dedita al servizio della verità, sempre e comunque; una stampa della quale, ancora oggi, abbiamo un assoluto bisogno.
