Ritratto di un giocatore professionista di biliardo la cui smania di vincere a tutti i costi ne farà un perdente. Dal romanzo The Hustler (195 di Walter Tevis, adattato dallo stesso regista. 4 interpretazioni eccellenti (tutte candidate agli Oscar come anche film, regia, sceneggiatura, ma vinsero soltanto il veterano Eugen Schüfftan per la fotografia e Harry Horner e Gene Callahan per la scenografia), costruzione narrativa compatta, dialoghi infallibili, il film è rimasto nella memoria degli spettatori soprattutto per la sagace descrizione del mondo americano del biliardo, come apologo sull'America amara e i suoi falsi miti: un'aria che quasi si respira. Newman riprese il personaggio di “Fast” Eddie Nelson in Il colore dei soldi di Scorsese.

RECENSIONE

Tra i film più celebri ed apprezzati del cosiddetto genere sportivo, e forse il più noto di quelli dedicati al mondo del biliardo, “Lo spaccone” sbarcò sul grande schermo nel 1961, guadagnandosi ben nove nomination agli Oscar, di cui due tramutatesi in premio, ovvero fotografia e scenografia per un’opera in bianco e nero. Adattamento dell’omonimo romanzo di Walter Trevis, la pellicola, scritta da Sidney Carroll e Robert Rossen, che ne è anche il regista, narra la storia di un giocatore di biliardo, Eddie (Paul Newman), di grande talento ma incapace di essere un vincente dentro e fuori dal tavolo verde.
L’opera parte subito forte, facendoci partecipi di una memorabile sfida a colpi di stecca fra il protagonista ed il giocatore più forte d’America, tal Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). Una sfida che oltrepassa ogni pensabile durata (i due si “combattono” per quasi 25 ore), e che ci fa conoscere fin da subito sia l’universo delle sale da gioco americane che il difficile carattere dello spaccone del titolo, quello che si direbbe un loser (“perdente”). Dopo questa abbuffata di buche, la storia si allontana dai fumosi ambienti del biliardo (ma non troppo) per introdurci altri due personaggi, fra loro antitetici: il primo è Sarah (Piper Laurie), protagonista di una fulminate storia d’amore con Eddie, e che rappresenta uno spiraglio di buon senso in un mondo come quello del biliardo e del gioco d’azzardo, dove non sembra esserci umanità; il secondo è invece Bert (George C. Scott), che al contrario, in quel mondo ci ha fatto la propria fortuna. La narrazione prosegue così fra le tensioni che si instaurano fra questi due personaggi, con al centro un Eddie sempre più confuso, fino alla tragica fine di Sarah, che diventa vittima sacrificale dell’ossessione di Eddie e del cinismo di Bert. La partita finale, la rivincita con Minnesota Fats, chiude perfettamente il cerchio, e con esso i sogni di gloria di quello che all’inizio era “lo spaccone”.
Quello che ne risulta alla fine è una dolente ricostruzione di una disillusione, che poggia su dialoghi curati e asciutti, ottime atmosfere che corroborano il tono amaro dell’opera, ed una serie di personaggi ben sviluppati ed interpretati. Anni più tardi ne è uscito anche un sequel, sempre con Paul Newman, “Il colore dei soldi”, più vivace ma meno profondo.
