La piccola Dorothy si crede infelice, scappa di casa e capita nel fantastico paese di Oz dove fa una serie di strani e meravigliosi incontri finch? capisce che, in fondo, a casina sua nel Kansas sta benone. Ma questa ? la morale del romanzo di Lyman Frank Baum pi? che del film che, invece, suggerisce il contrario: nel mondo meraviglioso di Oz senza la Strega Malvagia Dorothy starebbe benissimo. Belle canzoni (un Oscar per l'adattamento musicale di Herbert Stothart e uno per la canzone "Over the Rainbow" che ? ancora in repertorio), un ottimo lavoro di scene e costumi, umorismo, immaginazione e, in una squadra di eccellenti interpreti, una bravissima J. Garland che, nonostante i suoi sedici anni, ? un'attendibile Dorothy undicenne, sono le carte vincenti di questo classico hollywoodiano del cinema per famiglie che in Italia ebbe scarsa risonanza soltanto perch? usc? con molti anni di ritardo, dopo la guerra.

8 nomination all?Oscar (di cui due vinti), Oscar speciale per Judy Garland, inserito nel 1989 dal National Film Preservation Board nel National Film Registry, nel 2008 giudicato il miglior film fantasy mai realizzato dall?American Film Institute? Queste le prestigiose credenziali di un film mito, un vero cult, un piccolo gioiello famoso anche per aver cambiato 3 registi prima della scelta finale, aver impiegato 1.000 interpreti in 36 giorni di riprese, essere costato (cifra allora iperbolica) 2.700.000 dollari.
Un film che ha fatto la storia del cinema. Un trionfo di fantasia e di inventiva, visivamente splendido, accattivante nella trama e nelle splendide canzoni. Un film che fece trionfare Judy Garland in tutto il mondo, Judy Garland ovvero la pi? grande interprete di musical che Hollywood abbia mai generato (per nostra fortuna la Fox non cedette alla MGM la prescelta Shirley Temple).
Una fantasmagoria di colori che impreziosiscono le grandi coreografie, le mirabili interpretazioni di un cast che fa scintille, la miriade di effetti speciali (per il tempo veramente strabilianti), l?ottimo messaggio che ? alla base della storia (la ricerca di qualcosa che ci manca per poi scoprire di averlo sempre posseduto).

1) Il film in Italia giunse solo nel 1947.
2) nel 1974 fu realizzato il cartoon Journey Back to Oz di Hal Sutherland in cui Liza Minnelli, figlia di Judy Garland, d? voce alla protagonista.
3) Over the Rainbow alla fine degli anni ?60 divenne l?inno del movimento di liberazione omosessuale giacch? il 22 Giugno del 1969, il giorno della morte di Judy Garland, si svolse uno dei primi gay pride della storia a New York.
4) Over the Rainbow ? al primo posto della classifica ?Songs of the Century? compilata dalla Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts, e sempre al primo posto della lista ?100 Years, 100 Songs? dell?American Film Institute (e dire che il pezzo aveva rischiato di essere tagliato in fase di montaggio: fu eliminato ben due volte dalla colonna sonora, e reintrodotto per via delle proteste degli autori: qualcuno pensava che rallentasse il ritmo del film).
5) Recentemente Salman Rushdie ha intitolato al film un libro autobiografico. De Il Mago di Oz ha detto: ?? un film la cui forza propulsiva risiede nell?inadeguatezza degli adulti e nel fatto che la loro debolezza obblighi i bambini a prendere in mano il proprio destino?.
