TRAMA

Nella migliore tradizione del cinema kitsch. Troviamo Bernadette maturo transessuale, Mitzi travestito, con moglie e figli, Adam detto Felicia. Viaggiano in corriera attraverso l'Australia, ballano e cantano in play-back, dove capita. Ad esempio in un bar di ubriaconi e in un angolo di deserto, per gli indigeni. Accompagnati da una colonna sonora rigorosamente anni Settanta (tra Abba e Ritchie Family), giungono a Alice Springs, dove la consorte di Mitzi ha del lavoro per loro. Le loro solitudini unite sono ormai una solida amicizia. Secondo film per il regista dell'interessante Frauds con Phil Collins, presentato a Cannes nel 1993 e mai distribuito in Italia. Giovane ma promettente, sa coniugare lo spettacolo e l'introspezione dei protagonisti con sicura mano registica. Terence Stamp si è disegnato una interpretazione da Oscar. Nonostante il budget contenuto ha avuto successo in tutto il mondo.

RECENSIONE

Le avventure di due travestiti e un transessuale, che si spostano con un vecchio torpedone rosa di nome Priscilla, nelle distese desertiche dell’Australia, per fare il loro spettacolo. Superando i confini del pregiudizio, porteranno allegria e scompiglio ovunque.

Semplicemente entusiasmante. Portando sul grande schermo le Drag Queen – ossia individui travestiti da donne che non intendono rinunciare alle loro caratteristiche maschili senza, per questo, reprimere le loro tendenze omosessuali – Stephan Elliott ha realizzato un film divenuto presto un cult per il suo essere politicamente… scorretto. Infatti, quello che vediamo non è certo l’immagine stereotipata dell’omosessuale, con la sua delicatezza, sensibilità e difficoltà di vivere. E’ piuttosto una visione macchiettistica e sfacciata di questa realtà, supportata da una esilarante sceneggiatura, punteggiata da trovate sarcastiche e irriverenti, da meravigliosi e folli costumi premiati con l’Oscar, e dalle colonne sonore eccezionali degli Abba e dell’indimenticabile Gloria Gaynor, mimate dai tre attori (tutti e tre eterosessuali) con la tecnica del lipsynch. Un elogio all’audacia del cinema australiano e un modo per apprezzare l’Agente Smith in un contesto alquanto diverso dalla Matrice...
