La storia di un maialino adorabile e intelligente che lascia la fattoria dove vive con il suo padrone per intraprendere un rocambolesco viaggio in città. Il suo scopo è vincere un premio in denaro che salvi le sorti della fattoria. Sul suo cammino incontra un'incredibile varietà di nuovi animali di città, strani ed eccentrici con i quali condividerà le sue grandi avventure...

RECENSIONE

Dopo aver conquistato il cuore di grandi e piccini ed aver "insidiato" all'Oscar più di un collega umano, il maialino Babe torna sul grande schermo per una nuova avventura popolata di buffi e simpatici animali, esotici e non. Il titolo della pellicola, voluta fortemente da George Miller (Mad Max) e prodotta con il sostegno della Universal, è Babe Va In Città ed ha inizio proprio là dove si interrompeva il primo film, ovvero quando il maialino Babe, vinto il concorso nazionale per cani da pastore, fa il suo ritorno alla fattoria Hoggett dove viene accolto premurosamente non solo da tutti gli altri animali ma anche dalla moglie del fattore, Esme (Magda Szubanski), che fino a quel momento aveva creduto in lui solo come braciola. Un malaugurato incidente del fattore Hoggett (James Cromwell), provocato involontariamente dal maldestro maialino, modifica però gli eventi. Con il fattore allettato la situazione della fattoria precipita, grava infatti su di essa un'ipoteca la cui mancata estinzione rischia di mettere in discussione il futuro di quanti vi abitano. L'unica speranza di salvare la proprietà si rivela investire su Babe, esibendolo previo compenso ad una fiera paesana.

La signora Hoggett, maiale al guinzaglio, parte quindi alla volta della manifestazione, ma qualcosa durante il viaggio va storto, costringendo Esme e il suo paffuto compare a sostare in città. Qui i due cercano pazientemente alloggio in hotel e pensioncine, ma nessuno sembra disposto ad ospitare un maiale. Poi la strana coppia si imbatte in un piccolo e curioso hotel, l'Hotel Flealands, dove trova finalmente riparo. Ben presto Esme e Babe si rendono conto della peculiarità dell'hotel: avere come avventori esclusivamente animali (cani, gatti, scimmie). L'unico altro essere umano ad abitare la palazzina oltre alla segaligna proprietaria (Mary Stein) è infatti lo zio di questa, l'anziano e malaticcio Fugly Floom (un quasi inriconoscibile Mickey Rooney), circense in pensione...

Tratto, come già il primo Babe, dal fortunato romanzo "The Sheep-Pig" di Dick King-Smith dallo stesso Miller che del secondo episodio della "saga" ha curato oltre alla sceneggiatura ed alla produzione anche la regia, Babe Va In Città si presenta più ricco e divertente del film precedente sia visivamente che narrativamente. Più articolata e densa di colpi di scena è infatti la storia, più precisi ed accurati gli effetti speciali. Questo sequel non delude dunque chi ha amato il primo Babe, almeno nelle intenzioni. Eppure il pubblico ha accolto freddamente la pellicola... Forse, passata la novità di vedere un maiale parlante gentile ed intelligente, alla gente non interessa tuffarsi nella fantasia di un racconto ben scritto o forse è solo troppo avvezza a pellicole che si nutrono di banalità e di sangue per accorgersi di un piccolo grande film di buoni sentimenti.
