Candido è un giovane che vive in un castello della Westfalia, in Germania, e, dopo essere stato cacciato di casa dal barone, girovaga per paesi ed epoche diverse alla scoperta di ciò che fa girare e cambiare il mondo.
Il film, però, ricalca poco le atmosfere e la trama del libro, e si presenta, più che altro, come una libera e pretestuosa rilettura del famoso romanzo di Voltaire, anche in una chiave più contemporanea.
Voltaire, a 16th century author was furious that learned members of a "civilized" society could claim that the apparent senseless violence and mayhem wrought by disasters, war, disease, man's cruelty, etc. was actually only a part of some 'greater good'. After all, God (being perfect) could not 'logically' have created anything but the 'best of all possible' universes.
This is a most outlandish cinematic confection -- a sexual-psychedelic comic-variation on Voltaire's CANDIDE, that transcends time and logic. Basic coherency might be at a minimum, but it's never boring! A jaw-dropping tapestry of politics, bloodshed, fantasy, desire, death, and the human condition, it's an impossible-to-categorize, absurdist masterpiece from the demented genius of Jacopetti and Prosperi.
