Dal romanzo omonimo del 1984 di Marguerite Duras (che contestò duramente il film).
Annaud, quasi sicuramente per richiamare l'attenzione sul film, dichiarò che tutte le scene di sesso erano reali. Ciò venne subito smentito dall'attrice protagonista, Jane March, all'epoca minorenne. Tuttavia la pressante attenzione dei media inglesi sui giornali scandalistici su di lei e sulla sua famiglia fece ammalare Jane provocandogli inoltre un crollo psicologico. Dovette fuggire alla Seichelles per curarsi. Dopo di ciò Annaud smentì tutto attaccando anche duramente i giornalisti inglesi e annunciando che non avrebbe mai più parlato in futuro con la stampa inglese.
