L'originale bozza della sceneggiatura prevedeva come titolo The Babysitter Murders. Il film fu diretto da John Carpenter e interpretato da Donald Pleasence nel ruolo dello psicologo Sam Loomis, Jamie Lee Curtis nel ruolo di Laurie Strode, e Tony Moran nel ruolo di Michael Myers da grande (nell'elenco dei crediti appare come The Shape). Myers bambino è invece interpretato da Will Sandin. È il primo episodio della celebre saga che vede protagonista il maniaco omicida Michael Myers. La pellicola servì anche per il lancio di Jamie Lee Curtis, Nancy Kyes e P.J. Soles.

Nella città di Haddonfield, Illinois, il ragazzino Michael Audrey Myers (Michael Myers), durante la notte di Halloween, uccide la sorella maggiore che stava facendo da baby-sitter al fratello e alla sorellina neonata. Da allora Michael rimane in un ospedale psichiatrico sotto l'osservazione dello psicologo Samuel Loomis. Passati quindici anni Michael evade nella notte di Halloween e ritorna ad Haddonfield dove uccide tre amici di Laurie. Quest'ultima riesce .....................
