Jonas (Robert Walker Jr.) si ritrova per puro caso in una stazione di servizio al limite tra gli USA e il Messico. La padrona della stazione di servizio vede in Jonas il figlio Rocky (Marc Porel) - scappato di casa anni fa - e Jonas, da vagabondo, non rifiuta certo un posto dove può avere ospitalità per alcuni giorni. Il giorno in cui Jonas arriva alla stazione di servizio arriva anche la figlia di Mara, Billie (Mimsy Farmer): lei e Jonas stringono un'amicizia prima normale, lentamente appiccicosa sino a quando Jonas non scopre il mistero che si cela sotto quest'attenzione.
La ragazza aveva avuto anni prima una relazione incestuosa con il fratello: quando aveva creduto che lui la stesse lasciando, l'aveva ucciso. Nella mente contorta di Billie, Jonas era una sorta di spirito tornato dall'oltretomba a continuare quella relazione: Billie tronca la relazione, ma Jonas - innamorato ormai della ragazza - la vuole fare rimanere con lui e finirà per ucciderla.
Jonas, a young drifter, is wandering in a deserted area on the road to Salina. He stops to drink some water at a desolate roadside service station, when, Mara, the owner, identifies him as her son Rocky, who disappeared four years ago. Jonas is overwhelmed by the awkward situation, but tired and hungry, he accepts Mara’s offer of room and board. Feeling sorry for Mara, he pretends to be her beloved son Rocky. Jonas is soon comfortably assuming Rocky’s identity. Initially he believes that Mara is just delusional, but when Warren, Mara’s old friend and neighbor, arrives for a visit, surprisingly Warren also acts as if Jonas were Rocky.
