Carl Orff (10 luglio, 1895 – 29 marzo, 1982) è stato un compositore tedesco, famoso principalmente per i Carmina Burana (1937). Essendosi occupato specificamente anche di pedagogia e didattica, ha influenzato profondamente l’educazione musicale
Orff si è sempre rifiutato di parlare pubblicamente del suo passato. È risaputo, però, che Orff nacque a Monaco da una famiglia bavarese della grande borghesia, molto attiva nell’esercito tedesco. Suo padre era un ufficiale e sua madre pianista. A cinque anni iniziò a studiare sia il pianoforte che l’organo e il violoncello.
Orff studiò al conservatorio di Monaco fino al 1914. Prestò servizio durante la prima guerra mondiale. Lavorò poi all’Opera di Mannheim e di Darmstadt e in seguito tornò a Monaco per completare la sua educazione musicale.
Nel 1924 Orff fondò a Monaco, con l’amica Dorothea Günther, la Günther Schule, specializzata nell’insegnamento della musica, della danza e della ginnastica. Fu così che poté sviluppare le sue teorie sull’educazione musicale: a capo di un dipartimento di questa scuola, compose uno Schulwerk (una raccolta per l’educazione musicale, 1930-1933, rivisti nel 1950-1954), cioè una serie di esercizi graduali, da ritmi semplici fino a pezzi complessi per più strumenti per xilofoni e altri strumenti a percussione.
Mentre la collaborazione di Orff con il partito nazista è ancora dibattuta, è indubbio il successo riscosso dai suoi Carmina Burana, fin dalla prima a Francoforte nel 1937. Bisogna considerare però che fu uno tra i pochi compositori tedeschi che, durante il regime, risposero all’invito ufficiale a scrivere una nuova musica per Sogno di una notte di mezza estate, dopo che furono censurate le opere di Felix Mendelssohn: ciò suggerisce che fosse un simpatizzante del regime – altri si rifiutarono di collaborare.
Orff era amico di Kurt Huber, uno dei fondatori del movimento di resistenza Die Weisse Rose (la Rosa Bianca), e che fu condannato a morte dal Volksgerichtshof e ucciso dai nazisti nel 1943. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, Orff dichiarò di essere un membro del gruppo, e di aver partecipato nella resistenza, ma non ci sono prove del suo coinvolgimento, ad esclusione delle sue dichiarazioni, che vengono messe in discussione da altre fonti.
Orff è stato seppellito in una chiesa barocca a sud di Monaco.
Orff è conosciuto principalmente per i Carmina Burana. È la prima opera di una trilogia, chiamata Trionfi, che include Catulli Carmina e il Trionfo di Afrodite. Queste composizioni riflettono il suo interesse che spazia dalla poesia lirica antica alla poesia goliardica medievale latina. I Carmina Burana sono tratti da alcune poesie del XIII secolo composte da giovani studenti di un monastero tedesco. I numerosi temi, dall’amore erotico alla filosofia fino al buon cibo, sono legati dal leitmotiv del tempo che passa inesorabilmente; l’autore crea deliberatamente una musica semplice, per coro e orchestra, articolata intorno a dei ritmi vigorosi, dalle sonorità ricche.
Tra gli altri titoli, ricordiamo le opere Der Mond (La luna, 1939) e Die Kluge (La saggia, 1943), entrambe ispirate dai racconti di Grimm, e l’austera Antigonae (1949) che, sul testo di Sofocle (tradotto in tedesco da Hölderlin), cerca di ritrovare la dimensione della tragedia greca.

Worked in opera houses and returned to Munich 1920 for study with Kaminsky. In 1924 founded the Gunther School, Munich, where his life-long interest in children's musical education began. About this time he made editions of several operas by Monteverdi, including L'incoronazione di Poppea, comp. cantatas and an Entrata for orch. 'after William Byrd'.
In 1937, when his Carmina Burana was first performed, he disowned all his previous works, though some were later revised and restored. From then he composed exclusively for the stage, though not conventionally (Carmina Burana, for example, is usually given in a concert version). His mature style is dry and staccato, with much use of percussion and the content of the music based on rhythmic patterns and their variations. Harmony is reduced to basic elements. and melody is nearer to rhythmic speech than to the 'expressive' ideal of other composers.

I Carmina Burana sono testi poetici contenuti in un importante manoscritto del XIII secolo, il Codex Latinus Monacensis, proveniente dal convento di Benediktbeuern (l'antica Bura Sancti Benedicti fondata attorno al 740 da San Bonifacio nei pressi di Bad Tölz in Baviera) e attualmente custodito nella Biblioteca Nazionale di Monaco di Baviera.
Per le sue caratteristiche può essere definita anche "cantata scenica" ed ha il sottotitolo "Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantandae, comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis". L'opera non presenta una trama precisa e richiede tre solisti (un soprano,un tenore e un baritono), due cori (uno dei quali di voci bianche), mimi, ballerini e una grande orchestra (Orff ne ha composto anche una seconda versione dove l'orchestra è sostituita da due pianoforti e percussioni).
L'opera è strutturata in un prologo e tre parti. Nel prologo c'è l'invocazione alla Dea Fortuna sotto cui sfilano diversi personaggi emblematici dei vari destini individuali. Nella prima parte si celebra la "Veris laeta facies" ovvero il lieto aspetto della primavera. Nella seconda, "In taberna" ovvero "All'osteria", si hanno prevalentemente canti goliardici; nella terza parte, "Cour d'amours" cioè "Le corti dell'amore" contiene brani che inneggiano all'amore, che si concludono con il coro di grazie alla fanciulla ("Ave, formosissima" . Nel finale si ha la ripresa del coro iniziale alla Fortuna.

Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff in 1935 and 1936. It is based on 24 of the poems found in the medieval collection Carmina Burana. Its full Latin title is Carmina Burana: Cantiones profanæ cantoribus et choris cantandæ comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis ("Songs of Beuern: Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments and magic images." Carmina Burana is part of Trionfi, the musical triptych that also includes the cantata Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodite. The best-known movement is "Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi" ("O Fortuna" that opens and closes the piece.
Orff first encountered the text in John Addington Symonds's 1884 publication Wine, Women and Song, which included English translations of 46 poems from the collection. Michel Hofmann, a young law student and Latin and Greek enthusiast, assisted Orff in the selection and organization of 24 of these poems into a libretto, mostly in Latin verse, with a small amount of Middle High German and Old Provençal. The selection covers a wide range of topics, as familiar in the 13th century as they are in the 21st century: the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the ephemeral nature of life, the joy of the return of Spring, and the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust.
Orff was influenced melodically by late Renaissance and early Baroque models including William Byrd and Claudio Monteverdi. It is a common misconception that Orff based the melodies of Carmina Burana on neumeatic melodies; while many of the lyrics in the Burana Codex are enhanced with neumes, almost none of these melodies had been deciphered at the time of Orff's composition, and none of them had served Orff as a melodic model. His shimmering orchestration shows a deference to Stravinsky. In particular, Orff's music is very reminiscent of Stravinsky's earlier work, Les noces (The Wedding).
Rhythm for Orff, as for Stravinsky, is often the primary musical element. Overall, it sounds rhythmically straightforward and simple, but the metre will change freely from one measure to the next. While the rhythmic arc in a section is taken as a whole, a measure of five may be followed by one of seven, to one of four, and so on, often with caesura marked between them. These constant rhythmic changes combined with the caesura create a very "conversational" feel – so much so that the rhythmic complexities of the piece are often overlooked.
Uno dei più giovani e preparati direttori d'orchestra del mondo. Sposato, con tre figli. Dopo gli studi universitari presso la Facoltà di Filosofia, si diploma in pianoforte. Al Conservatorio di Napoli. Quindi, in composizione e direzione d'orchestra al Conservatorio di Milano. Nel 1967 è già vincitore della gara internazionale Guido Cantelli. Nel '68 debutta nella direzione del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Conservandola sino all'80.
Nel '71 esordisce al Mozart Festival di Salisburgo con il Don Pasquale. Di Gaetano Donizetti. Da quell'anno la manifestazione austriaca è una tappa fissa per il Maestro. Nel '72 è il direttore musicale della Philarmonia Orchestra di Londra. Dall'80 al '92 dirige la stessa prestigiosa orchestra anche negli Usa. Poi, nell'86, è chiamato come direttore musicale al Teatro alla Scala di Milano.
Protagonista applaudito di numerosi e prestigiosi concerti. In Italia e all'estero. Nell'89 nella Cattedrale di Salisburgo dirige la Messa da Requiem di Giuseppe Verdi. In onore di Herbert von Karajan. Nel '92 lo Stabat Mater di Gioacchino Rossini. In occasione delle celebrazioni del bicentenario del grande compositore. Nel '93 dirige ancora la Philarmonia Orchestra. Per le celebrazioni dei Cinquecentenario di Colombo. Nello stesso anno dirige l'orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino negli Uffizi.
Il Rigoletto di Giuseppe Verdi. La traviata. Falstaff. Mefistofele. Così fan tutte. Nabucco. Cavalleria rusticana. Sono solo alcune delle altre più celebri opere da lui dirette. Nel dicembre 1999 dirige l'Orchestra e il Coro del Teatro alla Scala di Milano nel Concerto di Natale dalla Scala. Nel gennaio 2000 il Concerto di Capodanno da Vienna. Trasmessi su RaiUno. A luglio, invece, dal Teatro Bolshoi di Mosca dirige la Non Sinfonia di Beethoven nell'ambito della manifestazoione Le vie dell'amicizia del Ravenna Festival.
Il Maestro è membro onorario della Royal Academy of Music di Londra. Dell'Accademia di Santa Cecilia di Roma. E dell'Accademia Luigi Cherubini di Firenze. Il 27 luglio 2001 dirige il Ravenna Festival.
