Insieme a Cracker, Better Than Ezra e Wallflowers, i Counting Crows sono stati fra i paladini della restaurazione, avendo riportato in auge quel rock "classico" tipicamente americano, incrocio delle tradizioni folk, blues e country, che deve la sua genesi ad artisti quali Bob Dylan, The Band, Little Feat, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Byrds, Van Morrison. Il sound dei Counting crows,opportunamente ammodernato dalle nevrosi ritmiche dei Rem e dal mood depresso-esistenziale tipico degli anni 90, si presenta come alternativa di qualità per quel pubblico borghese che cerca storie di ordinaria disperazione in cui identificarsi, senza doversi "sporcare" le orecchie con i parossismi metallici del grunge. Sono narrazioni per quella parte di generazione X disposta a tormentarsi ma non troppo, a rattristarsi ma non a flagellarsi, per quella parte cresciuta con "Beverly Hills 90210" e "Friends", pseudo-alternativa negli ideali, capace di criticare genericamente la società capitalistica e contemporaneamente fare la fila al McDonalds. I Counting Crows sono fautori di un sound radiofonico, in cui entrano in gioco diversi strumenti tradizionali, come organo, mandolino e armonica; un'orchestra rurale, insomma, come nella miglior tradizione della Band.
Sono proprio questi elementi, oltre a una discreta fantasia nell'arrangiamento, che permettono al gruppo di tenersi a distanza dalla aberrazioni sonore (sfacciatamente mainstream) di Collective Soul e Hootie and the Blowfish, titolari di un sound levigato all'inverosimile e privo di sincerità.
Il roots rock dei Counting Crows è nobilitato dall'organo atmosferico di Charlie Gillingham ma soprattutto dalla voce penetrante ancor prima che romantica di Adam Duritz, sintesi bastarda della passionalità soul di Van Morrison e delle intonazioni enfatiche di Bono Vox e Grant Lee Phillips. Ed è proprio qui il segreto dei Duritz, sviscerare storie di disperazione con accorata magniloquenza, rinverdendo così il mito del "beautiful loser". Songwriter di valore, Duritz racconta i drammi quotidiani della gente comune. Tra amori tormentati, fughe, scheletri nell'armadio e sogni infranti, il cantautore costruisce un corpus narrativo che fotografa al meglio la vita dei giovani nella provincia americana.

il cd August and Everything After è stato già rilasciato su questa board da "d_4d2" lo trovate qui, io l'ho inserito in ogni caso, per una questione di coerenza, una discografia senza l'album d'esordio non può definirsi tale(in parole povere se faccio l'export e manca quello non è una cosa piacevole),vi basta deselezionarlo quando scaricate il torrent...la qualità è la stessa.
la traccia 11 di"August and Everything After" potrebbe essere danneggiata, scusate ma ci ho fatto caso solo adesso
ps: i cd sono tutti rippati dagli originali a 320kbs; tranne i bootleg che sono rispettivamente a 192 e 256kbs
