I Savoy Brown si formarono nel 1966 negli ambienti blues di Londra. Il primo album, Shake Down (Decca, 1967),
pago` il debito verso la tradizione blues, ma a partire dal secondo, Getting To The Point (196 con líingresso del
cantante Chris Youlden e la maturazione del pianista boogie Bob Hall, il gruppo si rivelo` essere soprattutto il
veicolo per il chitarrista prodigio Kim Simmonds. Era lui a guidare e nobilitare il loro poderoso blues-rock, che
culmino` in geniali pastiche tipo Incredible Gnome Meets Jaxman (196, e soprattutto Train To Nowhere, la
gemma del 1969 (con un ritmo marciante di trombone sovrapposto a quello maestosamente ferroviario della
grancassa), e Iím Tired, líhit jazzato del 1970. Il loro repertorio annovera anche jam chilometriche come
Louisiana Blues (1969), Savoy Brown Boogie (1969), Wang Dang Doodle (1971) e Hell-bound Train (1972), dove il
demone chitarristico di Simmonds ricama le sue metalliche frasi spezzate nel cuore di un sound plumbeo ed
ossessivo, pietrificato nel respiro angosciato dellíorgano. Blue Matter (1969) e A Step Further (1969) furono gli
album piu` maturi, ciascuno meta` dal vivo e meta` in studio. Raw Sienna (1970), Looking In (1970), Street
Corner Talking (1971) e Hellbound Train (1972) erano forse troppi album in soli due anni. La formazione
continuava a cambiare attorno al chitarrista (meta` se ne ando` nel 1971 a formare i Foghat).
