Pulse opens with “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,†the opus with which the 1975 Wish You Were Here album – dedicated to Barrett – begins and ends. Pulse ends with the song “Wish You Were Here†from that album, with Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) joining in at the band's 1996 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Pulse contains the first ever filmed performance of Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album. It was released just three days before Roger Waters’ (with Nick Mason) performance of Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety at a concert in France.
It isn’t as if the release date had been established for a long time. In fact, when it was originally announced, Pulse was scheduled for release last January. That these various cosmic coincidences converged seems wholly in keeping with Pink Floyd’s storied history.
Pulse stands up well on its own merits, extraneous factors aside. Digital remastering of the audio and video makes the 1995 VHS tape version seem like a fuzzy bootleg by comparison. The VHS version was an interesting documentation of a concert. The DVD version is an utterly captivating sensory experience. It’s the closest you can get to being at a Pink Floyd performance without actually being there.
Although Pulse doesn’t capture the look and feel of the early Pink Floyd, it clearly shows the complexity and uniqueness of the band’s music. Much of the music performed here is from the band’s most recent (1994) album, but the inclusion of Dark Side and Wish You Were Here in the mix provides good historical perspective. The performances validate that it was the music, not the individual musicians, which set Pink Floyd apart and puts them in the top three or four classic rock bands on everybody’s lists.
The bonus “extras†help make the DVD set well worth the price of admission. They include backstage and other behind-the-scenes footage, screen films used in the band’s ‘70s live concert performances, and a “Bootlegging the Bootleggers†feature that showcases some “classic†bootleg videos of Floyd performances.

Pulse DVD, l’ultimo concerto dei Pink Floyd è stato pubblicato dopo numerosi rinvii anche su DVD. All’interno, oltre al concerto, troveremo molte chicche; ma andiamo per ordine. Nel 1994 il gruppo pubblicò “The Division Bell†e, nonostante il successo commerciale, i tre decidono di ritirarsi dalle scene e regalano al pubblico londinese un concerto nel 1995 chiamato “Pulseâ€. In questo spettacolo vengono eseguiti pezzi di un gruppo che ha fatto la storia della musica dagli anni ’60 fino ai ’90 e che non tramonterà mai.
Il concerto è diviso su due DVD. La prima parte si apre con “Shine On You Crazy Diamond†in una versione più breve rispetto a quella studio ma che regala le stesse emozioni. Dopo arriva una sequenza di canzoni che rimandano agli ultimi due album della band dove spiccano maggiormente “High Hopesâ€, “Take It Back†e “Coming Back To Lifeâ€. Dopo incominciano i classici del gruppo come “Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)â€, con un solo in chitarra del buon David Gilmour che è semplicemente fantastico, e “One Of These Daysâ€, pezzo estratto da “Meddle†del 1971 e che in questo doppio DVD assume una forma meno rabbiosa grazie al sound di Guy Pratt, il sostituto del bassista storico Roger Waters.
Il secondo DVD si apre con l’intera esecuzione di “The Dark Side Of The Moonâ€. Scelta discutibile in sé, ma quando si ascolta, tutti gli scettici si possono auto-convincere che questo è un capolavoro della musica perché è eseguito senza una sbavatura e pezzi come “Timeâ€, “Moneyâ€, “Brain Damage†ma soprattutto “The Great Gig In The Sky†e “Us And Them†portano l’ascoltatore in una nuova dimensione mai frequentata da nessuno. Alla fine di “Eclipse†il pubblico esplode in una Standing Ovation obbligatoria. Quarantacinque minuti di puro godimento per le orecchie… e per gli occhi.
Subito dopo iniziano i bis e il gruppo non vuole proprio risparmiarsi mettendo in scena tre veri assi nella manica finali: il primo è la magnifica “Wish You Were Here†che, nonostante siano passati trentun’ anni dalla sua pubblicazione, lascia ancora senza fiato l’ascoltatore. Si va avanti con “Comfortably Numb†estratta dal capolavoro di Waters “The Wall†e in quest’esecuzione live si sente la mancanza dell’autore soprattutto per l’interpretazione del testo e come gran finale il gruppo esegue una versione magnifica di “Run Like Hellâ€, che si apre con un solo del terzo leader David Gilmour, esecuzione ottima e finale da miglior concerto possibile.
Questo concerto è rimasto nella storia come il “Live At Pompeii†e il grande “Live In Venice†del 1989 e le riprese dirette David Mullet coronano un lavoro durato anni e anni. Questi due DVD inoltre contengono alcuni contenuti speciali tra cui “Wish You Were Here†suonata con Billy Corgan, leader degli Smashing Pumpkins, alla chitarra acustica.
Un lavoro fatto benissimo che racchiude quasi trent’anni di carriera di un gruppo che è diventata la storia del rock. Da acquistare.

Pink Floyd are an English rock band that initially earned recognition for their psychedelic rock music, and, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. They are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative cover art, and elaborate live shows. One of rock music's most successful acts, the group have sold over 200 million albums worldwide including 74.5 million albums in the United States alone.
Pink Floyd had moderate mainstream success and were one of the most popular bands in the London underground music scene in the late 1960s as a psychedelic band led by Syd Barrett; however, Barrett's erratic behaviour eventually forced his colleagues to replace him with guitarist and singer David Gilmour. After Barrett's departure, singer and bass player Roger Waters gradually became the dominant and driving force in the mid-1970s, until his eventual departure from the group in 1985. The band recorded several albums, achieving worldwide success with The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979). In 1985, Waters declared Pink Floyd defunct, but although the remaining members, led by Gilmour, were sued by Waters for rights to the name, they continued recording and touring as Pink Floyd and enjoyed commercial success with A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994), eventually reaching a settlement with Waters over the use of the name.
