Nintendo 64
The Nintendo 64, often abbreviated as N64, is Nintendo's third video game console (excluding portable systems) for the international market. Named for its 64-bit processor, it was released on June 23, 1996 in Japan, September 29, 1996 in North America, March 1, 1997 in Europe and Australia, and September 1, 1997 in France (the system also saw a release in Brazil, in partnership with Gradiente Eletronica S/A).
The N64 was released with two launch games (Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64) plus one in Japan (Saikyo Habu Shogi). The N64's suggested retail price was US $199 at its launch and it was later marketed with the slogan: "Get N, or get Out!"

Il Nintendo 64 è il successore del Super Famicom (in America ed Europa Super NES), console della Nintendo uscita nel 1990. Durante i primi anni novanta erano in sviluppo varie tecnologie per migliorare le capacità delle console dell'epoca: alcune di queste si erano tradotte in chip aggiuntivi che venivano di volta in volta inseriti a discrezione degli sviluppatori nelle cartucce e servivano per aumentare le prestazioni dei giochi aggiungendosi all'hardware del Super Nintendo.
Nel 1995/96, quando ormai l'era del Super NES era avviata definitamente alla fine, le grandi software house iniziarono a pensare alla prossima generazione di console, e mentre molte case optarono per il passaggio ai 32 bit, la Nintendo scelse invece di passare direttamente ai 64 bit e così, dopo alcuni anni di sviluppo, nacque il Nintendo 64. Lo sviluppo di applicazioni del Nintendo 64, terminò nel 2003, con lo sviluppo di The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, e Resident Evil 0, ma a loro volta riprogrammati per la successiva console, il Nintendo GameCube.
