If there was any doubt as to the influence and mass appeal The Pixies had over their 10 year existence, it should've been put to rest with the successful reunion tour they led last year. Right from popping in this DVD my spine tingles with anticipation and then "Where Is My Mind?" begins for the menu screen. What makes it awe inspiring is the crowd overwhelming the backing vocals, singing along, so that it just makes my hairs stand on end. Needless to say I am glad they recorded this tour, but ecstatic that the quality came out so well.
Despite only a couple of months of practice, it is blatantly apparent the band was in top form as they didn't even skip a beat. Literally on "Track" one, they show a compilation of several different shows over the course of the year for one song - "Bone Machine" and despite one little hiccup it is a flawless transition across each venue. That's hard enough in the studio, but live? Across a year! Man that's just impossible, but all the more impressive, which shows you the thought and consideration that went into recording this excellent piece of history.
Multiple moving cameras only enhance the effect, submersing you into the show, almost better than being there. And sound quality is better than a majority of live recordings I have ever heard, making this a must have on so many levels. And I'm sorry, just take a look at all of the live tracks; this is a solid show, not even getting into the bonus tracks. You practically have their entire discography in live format, even getting some of the rarities like "In Heaven (The Girl In The Radiator Song)".
While this is primarily taken from the Belfort, France show, the bonus songs give you different shows, from Coachella to Japan. The bonus tracks include snippets of tour information provided by Richard Jones (Pixies Tour Manager) & Myles Mangino (Production Manager/Lighting Designer) and a sparse amount of backstage footage. Going to the full DVD level you have the chance to choose any of six camera angles for a special "Monkey Gone To Heaven" live video experience.
While I am completely stoaked by the amount on this DVD, I wish they would have gone a little bit further and had commentary from the band itself. Beyond a little backstage action in the bonus commentaries, life backstage is completely avoided as is the tour life - further elaboration would have been icing to an already delicious masterpiece. I guess I am just biased by Fugazi's Instrument documentary which included the band counting out money made at the end of the night, you know, all the nitty-gritty stuff.
This is a necessity for any Pixies fan, even a growing fan. Based on quality alone this DVD is completely worth every second of recording and will be indelibly etched into my consciousness as the band itself is carved into the culture of music.
