Il film, segue lo scandalo dietro a un'inchiesta giornalistica tedesca.
Lars Bogenius, giornalista di punta della rivista Chronik di Amburgo, viene incaricato di scrivere un articolo sui migranti clandestini che dal Messico attraversano il confine degli Stati Uniti. Quando il suo collega freelance, Juan Romero, legge l’articolo, si rende conto che ci sono numerose incongruenze. Borgesius ha palesemente falsificato il materiale del reportage, inventando interviste e dichiarazioni.
Romero denuncia l’accaduto ma inizialmente non viene creduto. Si rende conto che la rivista nega l'evidenza per proteggere Borgesius e evitare uno scandalo. Il giornalista però non molla e nel dicembre del 2018 vince la sua battaglia.
La rivista è costretta a pubblicare un articolo che rende nota la manipolazione d’informazioni da parte di Lars Bogenius, una delle sue firme più note e pluripremiate.
