Ambientato dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, The Defeated è un dramma poliziesco narrato in inglese e tedesco, presentato in anteprima al 60° Festival della Televisione di Montecarlo, creato dalle stesse menti dietro alla serie nordica The Bridge, Mans Marlind e Bjorn Stein. Il protagonista è un poliziotto americano incaricato di trovare e catturare un criminale a Berlino, dove la sua missione si incrocia con quella di ritrovare suo fratello.
Max McLaughlin è un poliziotto di Brooklyn incaricato di rintracciare l’Al Capone della Berlino del dopoguerra, tale “Engelmacher” Gladow. Max è anche in missione per salvare suo fratello Moritz. Entrambi hanno un passato traumatico alle spalle, poi col tempo hanno preso strade molto diverse. Moritz, che ha prestato servizio nella seconda guerra mondiale, è tornato in Germania e ha iniziato a dare la caccia ai nazisti, uccidendoli in modi sempre più brutali. Moritz, invece, è diventato una persona violenta e potrebbe esserci lui dietro alcuni atti di vendetta contro ex nazisti. La lealtà di Max è messa in discussione dal suo superiore, Tom Franklin, che non si fida fino in fondo.
La missione del poliziotto si intreccia con quella di un’ex insegnante di linguistica universitaria che si è unita alle autorità tedesche nella speranza di ricostruire Berlino.
