In un distopico 2019 il pianeta Terra è stato reso inospitale da una contaminazione globale. Coloro che sono sopravvissuti al disastro vivono in una tecnologica struttura, governata da rigidi codici sociali e da una alienante routine.
Tra i pochi luoghi ancora non contaminati del pianeta c’è una paradisiaca isola, destinata ad essere colonizzata da tutti coloro che riescono a vincere la periodica lotteria organizzata dai gestori della struttura. Nessuno dei sopravvissuti osa mettere in dubbio le direttive dei gestori e tutti sembrano credere fermamente al pericolo di contaminazione che costringe l’umanità a rifugiarsi sotto terra.
Nessuno ad accezione di Lincoln-6-Echo (Ewan McGregor). L’uomo, infatti, trova che la versione dei fatti tramandata dai dirigenti sia piuttosto incongruente e la sua naturale curiosità lo spinge a mettere in dubbio ogni certezza in assenza di evidenza di fatti.
Un giorno, Lincoln-6-Echo trova un insetto nella struttura, segno tangibile che la vita sul pianeta sta continuando. Poco dopo, l’uomo assiste involontariamente all’esecuzione degli ultimi due vincitori della lotteria e capisce che l’isola non è altro che un pretesto per uccidere gli abitanti della struttura, senza creare sospetti.
Il giorno stesso, la sua cara amica Jordan-2-Delta (Scarlett Johansson) vince l’agognato biglietto e Lincoln-6-Echo la persuade a fuggire, prima di essere uccisa dai dirigenti.
Conscio che l’uomo si è trasformato in un pericolo testimone ,il dottor Merrick (Sean Ben) incarica il veterano Albert Laurent (Djimon Hounsou) di catturare i fuggitivi.
L’illusione dell’isola cela una verità agghiacciante sulla struttura e Lincoln-6-Echo dovrà tentare l’impossibile per aver salva la vita
