Tolkien, film diretto da Dome Karukoski, è un biopic dedicato all'autore della saga del Signore degli Anelli che ripercorre gli anni di formazione dello scrittore e le esperienze che lo hanno portato alla stesura dei romanzi della Terra di Mezzo. Orfano sopravvissuto alla Prima guerra mondiale, J.R.R. Tolkien (Nicholas Hoult) ricorda la sua giovinezza: gli studi, il primo amore, gli amici e i litigi, senza tralasciare l'ispirazione artistica, trovata in un gruppo di compagni emarginati a scuola, che trovano coraggio l'uno nell'altro.
Questo forte legame di amicizia si rafforza negli anni creando una compagnia fedele, come quella dell'anello - formata da artisti - che solo lo scoppio del primo conflitto mondiale rischierà di fare a pezzi. Proprio queste esperienze personali, tra cui la relazione con Edith Bratt (Lily Collins) e la fascinazione per il folklore nordico, spingeranno Tolkien a scrivere la serie di romanzi della Terra di Mezzo.
