Se c'è stato un artista che è riuscito a scardinare davvero le convenzioni nel rock senza perdere l'aplomb nemmeno per un attimo, quello è stato David Byrne: dal debutto coi Talking Heads fino alla collaborazione - nel 2012 - con St.Vincent, passando da quelle con Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Philip Glass e Fatboy Slim alla carriera solista. Byrne, più che un esploratore è stato un chirurgo, che prima ha dissezionato il post punk e la new wave, per poi passare alla world music e a mille altri territori di quella che comunemente viene considerata musica di consumo.
