TRAMA
Johan, pittore di grande fama, vive con la moglie Alma isolato dal mondo: questo perché il suo mondo immaginario sta diventando sempre di più una patologia, tanto da non fargli più capire quale sia la realtà e quale l'immaginazione. La moglie cerca di aiutarlo, ma dovrà anche stare attenta a non rimanere lei stessa vittima dell'oscuro mondo privato del marito.

QUOTE:

Uno dei film piu' personali di Bergman che rielabora un soggetto intitolato "Mangiatori d'uomini", sugli attori intesi come cannibali dei personaggi.
La riflessione viene estesa alla solitudine dell'artista, vittima delle proprie ossessioni e incapace di difendersi dalle pressioni del mondo esterno, raccontata dal punto di vista di una donna che, per amore del marito, accetta di finire preda degli stessi fantasmi.
Dall'andamento discontinuo [...], e' un film espressionista e cupo che ha i momenti mogliori nell'atmosfera da incubo che permea le angoscianti allucinazioni del protagonista.
L'ora del lupo e' quella tra la notte e l'alba, "in cui molta gente muore e molta gente nasce, quella in cui il sonno e' piu' profondo e gli incubi sono piu' reali".
