Mike Waters, un giovane quasi sempre in preda a convulsioni da astinenza a causa del continuo abuso di droga, cui ricorre anche perché malato di narcolessia, vaga lungo le strade di Portland, nell'Oregon, alla ricerca della madre che lo ha abbandonato da piccolo, di cui sono pieni i suoi sogni e le sue allucinazioni. Gli unici a soccorrerlo e a dimostrargli a modo loro una qualche solidarietà sono altri drogati e sbandati che Mike va incontrando nei suoi precari rifugi. Fra loro Scott Favor, un ragazzo proveniente da una famiglia-bene, il cui padre, sindaco della città, prima lo cerca affannosamente tramite la polizia, poi, al primo tentativo di rientro, non sa far altro che ricoprirlo di rimbrotti e ingiurie. Il ragazzo torna quindi alla strada e alla scuola di teppismo di cui la strada è l'habitat privilegiato, diventando amico di Mike che si innamora di lui. Ma quando, sulle tracce del vaghi ricordi di Mike, pervengono a un cascinale in degrado, nel quale l'ipotetica madre avrebbe ultimamente prestato servizio, vi incontrano l'avvenente Carmela. Scott se ne innamora e parte con lei senza una parola per Mike, che continua da solo il suo vagabondaggio.
